Advantages: Nice, refreshing and different

Disadvantages: Cant think of any

I would normally not have anything like this in the house because really it isn't my scene at all. My son and his girlfriend like a wee drink off a Saturday night and have for the last few months been searching and experimenting with different liqueurs and cocktails. Hence the sudden availability and subsequent sampling.

There's nothing too different from the bottle Midori comes in to that of any other Liqueur. It has a slightly dimpled effect on the bottom half and the labelling is nothing to write home about, being a simple circular green label with MIDORI in bold white writing.

Midori is one off these drinks that probably fall into the category of occasional. That's not to say it isn't nice for indeed it is just that it is perhaps a bit sweet for the average drinker. Mixed with other ingredients you can however get yourself one hell of a cocktail. On it's own mixed with some tonic water or lemonade it is very refreshing.

Being made of Honey Dew Melon it is green in colour and has a kind of slightly syrupy texture. The smell of melon is evident from the initial opening of the 70cl bottle. It smells as if you could drink it straight from the bottle, really yummy. As you might expect it tastes of melon, a very sweet melon I might add. Initially there does not appear to be much alcohol but a subsequent sip tells me different. At around £8 a bottle it's pretty good value. I prefer tonic with mine as I find this takes a bit of the sweetness away and does make a very nice drink.

Now as I said my son and his girlfriend were experimenting with different liqueurs, and this is where the title of the review comes in.

Take a shot glass which has been previously chilled in the fridge for a few hours. Add Midori up to the first 1/3 of the glass, the following 1/3 should be filled with Advocat. The final 1/3 with grenadine. The finished shot should look like traffic lights, RED AMBER and GREEN. Drink this down in one swig. Well stone me where,s the party…………………….NO not a drinks party, for this tastes like trifle when drunk like this. Mind you after a couple it starts to kick in. Delicious. I haven't a clue why it's called a squashed frog unless of course it's because if you don't pour correctly it turns out to look like what could vaguely be described as A Squashed frog.

If you don't have Advocat or Grenadine just use any Red and Amber coloured liqueur…………..it'll have the same effect LOL.

So Midori is a very nice melon Liqueur which when mixed with tonic or lemonade makes a lovely refreshing drink. Containing only 20% alcohol it isn't too strong. either.

Summary: A very nice drink for a change.

I'm rather fond of a drop of this in a cocktail every now and then. Lexy
