Montepulciano is one of the lesser known and more undervalued grape varieties. However, this does result in a wine that is also often under-priced and of exceptionally good value. It is an Italian grape variety, which grows best in the south of the country. It is a strongly flavoured wine, rich and laden with plummy fruit. It is grown most in Abruzzi, which grows solely montepulciano. The most superior producers in this region are Mezzanotte and Pepe but the wines produced by the co-ops are also of high quality.
