Morlands have been taken over by Greene King and the Abingdon brewery which produced Old Original has closed down. Old Original was my favourite local beer in the Thames Valley area - an excellent session bitter. When Greene King first became involved we noticed changes at our local pub - a Morlands tenanted house. Sometimes the beer was a different darker colour than usual and tasted quite different - unpleasant! Research with the draymen revealed that Greene King was being brewed at their brewery in parallel - so sometimes we had the Abingdon stuff and sometimes the new version, Customers voted with their feet or drank Guinness! A superb ale, made for the real ale drinkers in the area. An excellent session beer, it has plenty of body and flavour while still managing to be drinkable for the whole evening. The main disadvantage of this beer is the fact it only seems to be available in Morlands tenant pubs, and these are concentrated around the Abingdon brewery. For those of who no longer live in the area, it means I have to drink twice as much as normal when I happen upon a pint! It's a quintessential English bitter - long may it grace our pubs and may it gain as much fame and popularity as it's more famous sister, Old Speckled Hen. ... Read the complete review
