Mountain Dew Energy
Advantages: Thirst quenching and has a little perk to it
Disadvantages: Not a patch on original Mountain Dew for taste or Red Bull for kick
I like most people I was once a child. I say most people as I just tried to imagine Burt Reynolds as a child and it was impossible. I'n my imagination hes child like in stature but looks exactly the same, facial attire included.
Despite my parents having very a questionable fashion sense when it came to dressing children, I had a fairly lucky childhood - with one of the highlights being around at the right time and place for the launch of Mountain Dew in the UK. It was only around for a short while, two years or so before it was pulled in around 1998.
I loved this drink for those two short years. A teenage is fueled by sugar and Mountain Dew was packed. It was a toxic green color and tasted great. It tasted like a citrus fruit that grown almost entirely from a synthetic sugar. It doesn't taste or look natural - its safe to say I loved it as a kid.
So, since it was pulled in 1998 - I've been getting my fix by hook or by crook ever since, but usually via the internet. The recipe I tasted in '98 is still whats used in the US to this day. You can order it online, but always been a bit of a pricey chore. You pay more in P+P that you do in cans and it usually takes a few weeks to get to you. I persisted, I bought a few cans every month and when I went to the US I pretty much lived on it for 2 weeks. Morning. Noon. Night.
So, last year I nearly popped when I saw this on the supermarket shelf - Mountain Dew Energy. Its the same toxic green but re-bottled and cranked up to an 'energy' version. I bought a bottle right away and chugged it down. I instantly knew the difference. It didn't taste bad, but it didn't taste good. Its still sweet but this version is a really tuned down version than the US drink. It is still packed with sugar but its no where near a lively as the original. It tastes quite watery and a little dull compared.
I was disappointed and haven't bought much since - but I still by lots of the import stuff. This bottle is around £1.50 and a smaller can of the US stuff works out at about the same - maybe a little more. The US is harder to get: online and a few specialist shops sell it (two in Norwich, a sweet shop specializing in US sweets and a greengrocer, unofficially the greatest greengrocer on earth) The UK energy version is availble in most supermarkets and newsagents, but I still rather go out of my way for the real deal - although the energy version is clearly a different version it takes a bit like a watered down fake.
Its give a nice thrust quenching blast and especially if chilled its nice - so when I do drink it its OK, but would much rather they just relaunch the original product here.
The biggest disappointment here is the 'ENERGY' or lack off. I used to drink a lot of energy drinks, but due to actual medical advice and endless headaches - I slowed down. I stick to coffee and an energy drink a week now, but I know a buzz when I drink one, and this doesn't really have one. It will perk you up a little, but that just seems to be the sugar and citrus taste - there is not oohmph here. Its similar to a bottle of Lucozade - so it keeps you going rather than keep you up. Its depends on why and when you drink energy drinks I guess. This won't jolt you into a early start after a long night, but will slow your afternoon lull. Infact, the US version has a bigger kick - a can of Mountain Dew has often be a chilled replacement to my morning cup of coffee. You can sort if get a picture how energy drinks eventually took me to the doctors. Infact, I wouldn't really use this as an energy drink. If your in a situation where the need to perk up is more important than the eventual caffine crash and headache a small can of Red Bull or Monster, opt for Red Bull or Monster than this. If a perky little refreshment your after - this is will do.
Summary: An OK little refresher.
