Timeless Mozart, this isn't (Mozart Distillerie Mozart Gold Original)

Advantages: smooth taste, no one flavor too overpowering

Disadvantages: goes bad 6 months after opening even in the fridge and it must be refrigerated

For someone who loves chocolate like myself, and is also enamored by the music of Mozart, finding this liqueur was a fantasy for me. So, when I found myself in Schipol's Duty Free with some extra Kroner (yes, it was a long while back) to get rid of, I headed for the liqueurs. There, on the shelf was a gold foil covered bon-bon shaped bottle that touted the word "MOZART". It was then I knew I had to make this dream into a reality. (Remember, this was a while ago, and I don't remember if it was expensive or not - but I think it was reasonable, at the time.)

When we got it safely home, we had to open it up and give it a try. What we found was a creamy beige colored liquid with a mixture of chocolate, almond, kirsch and alcohol scents. We took out our special liqueur glasses and filled up.

Now, normally, I'm not much of a kirsch drinker (in fact, I don't particularly like it at all), but the combination of the the almond and the chocolate easily contrasted with the krisch flavor and made this a delightful, if slightly sweet, after dinner drink. The addition of the cream seemes to smooth all of this together, and especially the alcohol in this drink. Something akin to Baileys Irish Cream, in that respect.

We also tried putting this into freshly brewed coffee to see the results - it was not as we had expected, but it certainly did wake us up. Somehow, the heated liqueur just wasn't our thing - but no one is stopping you, it was interesting and certainly better than some of those additions you find in those fancy coffee bars these days.

We also tried pouring this over vanilla ice cream. This was a wonderful, and I'd highly recommend it. Its also great drunk over ice - much like having a Kaluah and Cream type of drink all ready mixed in one bottle.

As I mentioned above, the bottle looks like a large, gold covered bon-bon - not unlike the famous Mozartkuggen candies that Austria is so famous for. The only difference is that it has a neck on it. Good thing too, or we'd have had some difficult time getting the liquid out of the bottle, right?! And while I liked the packaging, my fridge did not - it didn't fit into any of the door shelves, which would have kept it in view for more efficient consumption. So, it got stuck in the back of the fridge and - GASP - almost forgotten!

Unfortunately, there is one other problem with this product. As I mentioned before, it contains cream, and therefore must be refrigerated after opening and should be consumed within six months. Now, not being large consumers of liqueur by a long shot, we were forced to throw out some of this lovely liqueur when it had gone bad (it didn't really smell funny, but... we were scared). Anyway, this, I found to be a painful experience! One would have thought that something with the timeless name of Mozart on it, would also be timeless. Oh, well - I guess you'll just have to be bigger drinkers than we are if you don't want the sad experience of throwing out something as lovely as this.

Go ahead. Buy a bottle. Put the Requiem on the stereo and drink away! And while you're at it - invite some friends over to enjoy this with you.
