Advantages: Change from tea, Cheaper than a cafe
Disadvantages: No chocolate!
I've got several boxes of Nescafe Cappuccino in my cupboard at present. Something tells me they won't be there for long. I'm a tea drinker really, occasionally defecting to filter coffee, but for a change (and because it was on special offer) I've been drinking Cappuccino. I tend to order Cappuccino when going into cafes around the world, mainly because wherever you are, you don't need to speak in a foreign language. Each time I buy one, it's never the same, some are simply great, almost works of art, others just about drinkable.
To be honest, I wasn't expecting the Nescafe products to be more than just drinkable, still they'd pass in a cafe at a pinch, and they work out a lot cheaper of course. I've got two different products here, one is just Cappuccino, the other is Cafe au Chocolat. The orignal comes in a box with 10 sachets, the Chocolate one, just 8 (which I didn't actually notice til I'd got them home). The boxes are the same size, and I feel slightly conned by the absense of 2 packets in the latter variety. The choc one though, is 18g per packet, as opposed to 12.5 however so you actually get more weight, but less cups. The original Cappuccino is unsweetened, although a sweetened version is also available. There's also a Latte, Vanilla and a Double Choca Mocha which I've yet to try, plus a decaf one, which I've no intention of trying.
There's not a huge amount to talk about when it comes to packaging. The original product shows a nice cup of Cappuccino, topped with chocolate - there is however no chocolate topping in the box* - see addendum at bottom, you have to add some yourself. The Chocolat variety shows a similar cup, but with no Chocolate topping, sounds like they've mixed them up to me! Both products show nutritional information, indicating just a few grams of fat per cup (assuming you don't add anything.
Making a cup is simple enough. Boil the kettle, get a clean cup, open a sachet, and pour in the contents. Once the kettle has almost boiled, fill the cup. Stir it quite a bit, and you'll get a nice froth on the top. You'll smell the glimpse of a coffee shop in the distance....Just as it should be if you ask me. I always let mine cool for 5 mins before I drink it, or it's too hot. I don't usually add sugar, but have tried it and it naturally sweetens the flavour of course. Even without the sugar, it still tastes quite sweet anyway. I don't tend to keep chocolate in the house either, so drink it as it is, but you could if you wanted grate some up and sprinkle it on the top, add some squirty cream or something too.
The standard product is not outstanding by any means, but perfectly drinkable, and nice enough to give to your visitors when they come round, makes a change from tea of coffee. The choc version is link coffee, but with a hint of chocolate, it's not sickly, certainly different anyway. It's not something which will sit in the cupboard forever like some things we buy to try out. Give your cup a good rinse after you're done drinking it, as it tends to leave quite a mess.
Tescos stock these at £1.99 per box of 10 sachets, or two boxes for £3.00 at the moment. The Choc version is for 8 sachets, although the price is the same. Not exactly cheap, but at aroud 20p a cup, it's a darn sight better value than some trendy cafe - although you might not get the same ambience drinking it in your kitchen.
Overall, worth a try.
* sirg0508 informs me that there is chocolate in this! Well not in mine...ever! I've emailed to ask Nestle why this is....

- 20/05/05 I'd have to agree, I wouldn't expect much from nescafe as I think their ordinary is not pleasant, but the cappucino sounds good, may have to give it a try. Good review Helen
