Advantages: Fine ground, looks like powder not granules, tastes smooth/ milder

Disadvantages: no good if you fancy a strong black coffee

I bought this product as we use quite a lot of coffee in our house, my husband will only drink Nescafe. Kenco, Tassimo or the "premium" brands and will scoff if I buy Tesco's own or some value coffe (I argue its all coffee and caffeinated... alas, he's a bit of a purist...).

Me being a little stubborn and wanting to watch the pennies as far as possible, I did a search on the Tesco website for Nescafe and basically bought the one that worked out the cheapest. This came in at £1.19 for 100g compared to £1.70+ for the normal Nescafe instant coffee packs.

When it arrived, I found the pack to be your average Nescafe jar- it has a grab hold around the shoulder section and comes in a glass jar with a caramel brown lastic lid. There is the normal fresh seal bit of foil sealing the jar and you get your 1 nescafe bean token on the back (to save up for things like Nescafe dressing gowns....).

When I opened this and poured it into our coffe storage container, I saw it is paler than other nescafe coffee (a caramel brown colour like the plastic on the lid) and it looks like they have taken normal nescafe instant coffe granules and ground them into a fine powder.

My husband was a little intrigued and lots of "ooh what's this" came from the kitchen. It is a little off putting to see if have this different consistency to normal coffee granules as you aren't sure if it is some sort of concentrated coffee (if thats possible) and if the fine powder means you have to use less as it is ground down.

Reading the jar, one serving is supposed to be only 1.8g of coffee and 200ml of water (a mug worth) this means you should get 50 cups of coffee per 100g jar. 1.8g is about a level teaspoon (a small teaspoon). This coffee is mild and smooth, we found it less in your face than normal nescafe, but as with most instant general use coffee, it depends on your taste and how much powder you put into your drink.

I would recommend this if you dislike strong black coffee. It is smoother and milder but it has all the hallmarks of Nescafe quality. See if yu can find it on offer somewhere and try the 100g tub to see what you think. If you prefer espresso/ think black coffee then avoid this as you aren't going to get your sharp coffee kick from it.

Summary: Worth a try if you haven't tried it before and like milder coffee
