I do tend to buy my tea and coffee in the major supermarkets that are near my home when I am doing some other shopping, although from time to time we do run out and coffee is very much considered to be an 'essential' item in our household! This means that from time to time we do tend to buy our coffee from one of the local mini-markets or corner shops near to our home.
This happened recently, and my partner came home from the corner shop with a jar of Nescafe Gold blend coffee. The 100g glass jar of this coffee cost £2.89, which is quite a considerable bit more than what I would usually spend on a jar of coffee if I am being honest.
That said, having now finished the original jar and having just purchased another, I think it is easy to see that you do indeed 'get what you pay for' with some products, and this coffee is really of quite a high standard in my humble opinion - we did get a jar of good quality coffee here, more expensive price tag or not!
The glass jar has a bit of a curve in the middle, to allow it to be grasped quite easily. Other than that, I didn't think that the packaging on the whole offered anything of a particularly eye-catching or remarkable design. The jar is exactly like the one shown in the picture at the top of the Dooyoo page.
The plastic screw-top lid, when removed from the jar, allows the aroma of the coffee to escape from the jar. Said aroma is very rich, and quite strong when compared to supermarket-own branded coffee in particular.
The granules look to be of quite a high quality and I did think that they were a lighter colour than other brands of coffee that we buy on a regular basis. Whether this is in relation to the 'Gold' aspect of this particular of coffee or not is anybody's guess but all in all the coffee granules look pleasant enough to me.
I find the strength of the coffee is of course down to individual taste, but one teaspoon of the Nescafe gold blend coffee is more than sufficient for my own taste. My partner likes his coffee slightly stronger, so he tends to have a slightly more 'heaped' teaspoon when preparing his own cuppa.
With milk and sugar added, I find that the taste of the Nescafe gold blend is indeed quite rich and very satisfying. I would point out that I am a huge coffee addict, and this brand of coffee really does hit the spot for me in terms of taste. The flavour is quite 'smooth', although not as smooth as some other leading brands I buy regularly, but I don't find that this coffee is overly bitter or harsh at all.
I find that every cup of coffee I make using the Nescafe gold blend is a winning cuppa! For this reason and for the delicious taste, I will continue to buy it from time to time, although to be honest I would probably stick to a slightly cheaper brand when the pennies are a bit tight. This coffee does offer a little bit of luxury in my opinion, and I am happy to buy it from time to time.
The nutritional information on the label to the reverse of the jar informs me that the 100g jar contains 63 calories and 0.2g of fat. I am unsure whether this brand fares better or worse than other brands in terms of the nutritional values.
There is a website for the manufacturer at www.nescafe.co.uk.
All in all I would award this coffee top marks. I know it is not a brand that is the most economical in terms of value for money, but I do believe that in this instance we are paying a bit more for a product of a higher quality and therefore I don't think it would be fair to deduct a point or star for this alone.
Summary: You get what you pay for..!

- 21/10/09 Nescafe's not my favourite brand - it's good though - and I agree that you get what you pay for, especially with coffee. El cheapo coffee is usually ghastly. |
