Advantages: Convient, Ok taste

Disadvantages: Expensive for what it is, Could be hotter and stronger

I purchases a couple of these nescafe hot drinks for a journey over to France and Belguim as I do long distance driving sometimes. I therefore thought I would try the revolutionary invention of the self heating coffee can which has been longly awaited for. I got two types, one coffee white with sugar, the other without sugar. I thought these would be handy although I still took a flask of coffee with me for the train journey on Eurotunnel.

I personally class myself as a medium to heavy coffee drinker and I do love my coffee. My original expectations for this self heating can was quite high with the study into this can taking 3 or 4 years to get right. I personally did not think much to the nescafe hot, this could be as my expectations were not met by taste.

* Taste *

The taste was ok and is ideal for those that enjoy what I class as being a weak coffee. The taste was a fresh taste instead of the instant coffee taste which you get from the super market. The only thing I did not like was that the coffee tasted a bit creamy, this could be a matter of a couple of reasons. One being that full or semi skimmed milk was used, and I tend to drink fresh skimmed milk. Secondly, it could be the type of water used and the way in which it was heated.

The aroma of this coffee is an inportant factor in determining a good coffee. The aroma was weak but you could tell it was Nescafe. Still room for improvement.

* How long does it take to make? *

This actually suprised me. All you do is tip the can upside down. Place your thump or finger through the plastic gap and press firmly the flouresnt red liquid in the middle of the can and then shake gently until all the red liquid has disapeared. You can then turn the can the correct way round and wait for three minutes before pulling the ring pull on the top of the can. the whole process lasts about 3½ to 4 minutes.

I presume the can heats up by breaking the fluid with then tur
ns into a solid matter. When the liduid turns to a solid, the chain reaction creates a vast level of heat which can be felt through the can itself (so be carefull). This then sufficiently heats the liquid to approx 80 oC. (this probably explains the taste as stated in the taste section as the water is not fully boiled). Within a couple of minutes, the Nescafe Hot is ready to drink.

I was disapointed with the amount of coffee I actually got. Out of the whole can, only about a third of it was fluid as the heating element was sticking up through the middle.

The nescafe hot did not clench my thirst after drinking it. I still had to go to my flask of coffee to make it feel as if I have actually had a drink and that I have had a cafine increase in my system.

If you wish to buy one of these drinks, it is not for a regular coffee drinker but is ok and suitable for day trips and car jouneys. If you wish to buy one, the cans do also look very similar. The only difference is a bit of writing on the side of the can and a bit on the rim stating what it is. It is easy to pick up the wrong one.

* How much does this Nescafe hot cost?*

The cost of this this coffee is £1.10 per can in Morrisons, Sainsburys, Asda and Tescos
which is a standard price. There might be a slight difference in price though up and down the country but this wont be much. The price may even fall if this Nescafe hot takes off.

This product I dont think will replace the good old flask of coffee, but will be suitable for those that cannot be bothered to make a flask, business people and those who are not really a coffee drinker who have purchased the product for convience.

This product needs to acheive better taste and a lower price before I buy this again.

You may enjoy this produt! but I do like my coffee (and strong). Even though I have not enjoyed this product as much as I could have done, I will still stay with Nescafe coffee.

In response to jillmurphy, the liquid breaks down when the liquid is disturbed by air pressure and being punctured. This then creates a chemical reaction which creates heat, which in turns make the liquid dry itself up and turn to a solid. It is a bit like water turning to ice, but the opposite in terms of chemical reaction. At least this is how I think it happens, but it has taken years to perfect as well.

I have never come across this product. Sounds strange. Good op.

I still don't feel much the wiser! How does it break down the liquid?
