Advantages: Good coffee
Disadvantages: Expensive
I always like to have a decent jar of instant coffee around, in case I need a cup. I do tend to chop and change, and more recently I have been leaning towards Fair Trade coffee, and those of the organic variety. Maybe it's the morals in me coming out, or maybe it's just that I fancied a change and liked it.
After a while in the coffee wilderness, I ran out the other day and had to dash to my local Somerfield. I had a choice of Nescafe or their own brand. Having experienced the latter and not really liked it, I picked up a small jar of Nescafe to try. I made myself a cup straight away when I got back, and noticed the difference immediately. There is a significant price difference between a brand such as Nescafe and an own brand coffee. Tesco actually do a very nice fair trade own brand, but this costs a lot less than I paid for the 50g jar of expensive ground beans.
Nescafe Original is a beautiful blend of the finest coffee beans (so we're told) and the flavour is heavenly. It smells better than average coffees and definitely tastes it too. The main reason we drink coffee is to get the stimulating effects from it. Coffee contains caffeine, which stimulates the brain's cortex, increasing mental activity. I am one of those people who has an instant reaction to any form of caffeine. My mum used to have to get me caffeine free coke when I was a kid because it made me hyperactive. This coffee is no exception, but the taste of it still makes me have ahuge mug. Inevitably, I'm sitting here tap-tapping away nineteen to the dozen because I've had a cup and now I'm all hyper.
Nescafe Original is a very good coffee. I probably will switch back to an own brand (decent one, though!) for my next jar, simply because I do drink a lot of coffee and this is rather expensive. As a guide, Tesco do Nescafe Original for £1.34 for a 50g jar. Their organic colombian fair trade coffee is £2.35 but this gives you 5 times the amount, 250g. The choice is up to you, but the quality is there in both of them.
Summary: Great coffee but at an expensive price
