Advantages: storage life, convenient, tasty too.

Disadvantages: Not to everyones taste.

I have been using this stuff for many years now, as a reserve emergency supply of dried milk, and also as a practical means of taking milk when I am away driving, liquid milk is so easy to spill, you need to be careful of it going off, not available in small containers etc.

Coffee-Mate is a white powder, which is so easily dissolved in coffee, giving it a lovely creamy taste. The taste is designed to be a perfect accompaniment to coffee, hence the name Coffee Compliment! . It is fairly cheap at a Pound for the 200 gramme size.

This is produced by Nestles of course, who have quite a reputation, and their products of good quality. I have been to the factory and am well pleased with the general clean hygienic look of the place.

This comes in the 200g tubs, and they also do a 500g size which has apparently got an official shelf life of 2 years, I personally argue that this is a "best before date" Not a "must throw away after" date. I paid just One Pound for the 200 size.

The container itself is very good, strong cardboard, with a plastic lid that you can re-use. Small enough to store in your cupboard, or to take with you on picnics.

Contents:-
Glucose Syrup. Hydrogenated Vegetable Fat. Stabilisers (E340, E452) (E331) Milk Proteins. Emulsifiers (E472e E471) Anti Caking Agent E551. Colour E101. Sugars 1%. Fat 3%. Saturates 11%. Salt 1%.

I do not intend boring you with the history of Nestles - Henry Nestle founded it in 1868, initially to manufacture condensed milk. Nestles have since bought out Rowntree and invented the famous Milky Bar in 1937.

Nestles do have a decent web site, see it here:-
http://www.nestle.co.uk
you can find out most things about Nestles on here, but if you did need to know anything else, there is a Customer Careline - just ring 00800 63785385. (Freephone of course).

I can not recommend the stuff too highly, there is also the fact that there is not any real alternative! I actually like the taste, and could even get used to having this instead of using fresh milk.

Summary: A real "must have" standby In every home.

I think it's really useful but don't buy it as it has hydrogenated fats which increase heart disease risk.

I used to use this but kept getting lumps - no matter how hard I stirred.

It's bad news for diabetics though. My husband was using this and his blood sugar was all over the place. Then I read the label and found the first ingredient was glucose syrup! He's now on black coffee!
