Advantages: Gives you a smooth, creamy coffee
Disadvantages: It's not exactly good for you
I remember being caught short for milk at work some years ago and reluctantly agreed to use some of a colleague's Coffee Mate, the premium UK brand of coffee whitener. I was very pleasantly surprised.
Coffee Mate is a powder that acts as a substitute for milk in hot drinks, most specifically coffee. It is probably not advisable to use this in tea. This product comes in gold coloured cardboard packaging that is somewhere between tube shaped and barrel shaped.
To quote it's own packaging Coffee Mate is made from "a blend of glucose syrup and vegetable oil". There are also all manner of stabilisers and emulsifiers in there (not great I know). This doesn't exactly add up to it being the healthiest product on the market, but hey, we are only talking a couple of teaspoons at a time.
I find it is best to add this stuff at the very last minute after you have already combined hot water with instant coffee granules (Nescafe or Kenco are fine) and brown sugar. Add 2 heaped teaspoons and give it a good stir. You end up with coffee that is really smooth and creamy and a pleasure to drink. This product definitely adds much more depth to a cup of coffee than milk does.
Since using Coffee Mate for the first time I am now loath to use milk in my coffee, a complete reversal of how things used to be.
You can pick up a 500 gram tub for around £1.80 to £2.00 depending on where you buy it from. I get mine from Tesco and the last time I was there I paid £1.89, but all the big supermarkets and most local shops stock this brand. A 500 gram tub will be good for around 75 servings.
What can I say? I am a total convert. You definitely owe it to yourself to try this if you have never done so before.
Coffee Mate contains 36 calories and 2.2g of fat per 6.5g serving. So have it as a treat :)
Summary: Great coffee whitener. Goes better with coffee than milk does.

- 20/06/09 I have to agree with you, but we only ever use this in emergencies which is a pity. |

- 17/06/09 This stuff makes coffee taste heavenly but it's so high in fat I try to pretend it doesn't exist! |
