Advantages: Creamy and smooth

Disadvantages: High in calories so I can not have a lot of it

The Packaging ************

Nestles Coffee mate usually comes in a tub or barrel shaped container. There is a picture of a cup of steaming hot coffee on the front and the steam is rising creating a heart shape that contains the Nestle trade name. The colour of the container is a caramel colour slowly fading into a lighter coffee color as it goes up the container. The lid is plastic and under the lid is a foil seal to keep the contents fresh. At the moment they are selling this with a 33% extra free.

The Contents ************

Coffee mate is a coffee whitening powder that can be used instead of milk. It is made up of a mixture of Glucose, vegetables and emulsifiers and a host of other ingredients. In each 6.5g serving, a heaped teaspoon is about 5g, there is 36 calories, 0.6g sugar, 2.2g fat, 1.7g saturates and 0.1g salt. You usually have 2 heaped teaspoons of this in a cup or mug of coffee.

My View **************

I have always avoided using coffee whiteners as i have found them in the past to be gritty, and some even leave an after taste in the mouth. I was introduced to coffee mate by accident by my mother in law. I dont think she was trying to poison me, she just got the cups mixed up, well thats her story anyway.

What a lucky slip up for me, the coffee tasted so much better with coffee mate in it. It makes the coffee so much creamier than what it normally does with just milk. A few days later i purchased a tub of this for home. To find a powder that actually improves the taste of coffee even more is a real delight.

I did not think you could improve instant coffee such as nescaffe without getting the percolator out. Well now you can, just be adding 2 teaspoons of coffee mate. The taste is absolutely delicious and every one i know that has tried it also agree. Give it a try i am sure you will be a convert after just one cup.

We tend to use it as a treat, maybe one cup a day with coffee mate in it. It is high in calories so its not ideal if you are trying to burn a few pounds off. The other thing is that unlike milk it does not cool your coffee down at all, so do not take a mouthful straight away as you will end up burning your mouth.

Coffee mate is a whitener but it will not whiten your coffee as much as milk does. A good combination is to put a small amount of milk in and then add a spoonful of coffee mate. I have found that if you add the coffee mate at the same time you add the coffee and then pour the hot water into the cup you do not even have to stir it.

For a 266g container you will pay anywhere from about £1.09 - £1.14. In each tin there is Approx 40 servings. I have also noticed that there is an end date on the bottom of the container, ours has 11/2009. Watch this space as i also have a tin of this up my allotment and it will be interesting to see if it sill holds its lovely creamy taste once its out of date.

Summary: A great compliment to your cuppa
