Advantages: Easy to use, quick and disposable
Disadvantages: Can be pricey if you go through a lot of them, only two choices
As the mother of two young children (aged 3 and 6), I am constantly on the lookout for new and interesting ways to get my kids to drink milk. We all know of the health benefits to drinking milk and most mums (and dads!) will agree that it is an uphill battle to persuade most kids to be a bit more healthy nowadays. I guess I am lucky in that sense, my kids will choose milk over any other drink and tend to go through about 10 litres of the white stuff every week between them! Yes my milk bill is high but it's worth it!
The Nesquick bunny rabbit - any parent will instantly recognise him in an advert for the instant chocolate or strawberry milkshake powder that is readily on sale in most supermarkets. The company also market ready made milk drinks, cereals and fromage frais pots for children and adults alike. But more recently the company brought out Magic Straws. These are just like normal straws, except that they are thicker and include little granules of milkshake mix in order to make the milkshake without the powder.
The adverts on the television show the young kids taking a glass of milk and making it taste of strawberry or chocolate by "magic", obviously hence the name of the product. Sold in a pack of 10 individually wrapped straws, these sell in Tescos for £1.22, with prices around this in other supermarkets, the price is quite reasonable in my own honest opinion. But on to the nitty gritty, how does it taste????
As I mentioned earlier, the straws are like normal straws, except they are thicker. They look like a wide straw with a thinner one inside, in the gap is the milkshake powder that makes the milk go magic. To use them is easy, just pour a glass of milk and drink through the straw. These ones make the milk taste like a chocolate milkshake and they do work. I even tested one myself. Just to make sure that my review was based on fact, and not just what the kids tell me about it!
Not being the great chocoholic, I found that by the end of the milk, the taste had become a little sickly to me, but my kids will keep drinking until there is no more milk. I have never had a complaint from them as far as taste is concerned. The only complaints that come from my kids is when the straws are all gone and I have to go and buy some more. If I forget to go, well they are not impressed at all!
The packaging is recyclable, which is good. I have also found that the straws themselves are recyclable as well, which is a bonus. On the back of the outer packaging are instructions for the best way to drink milk through these straws, along with the usual ingredients list and some health facts as to the benefits of drinking milk and that 1 straw + 250ml of semi skimmed milk with provide a child with 39% of the recommended daily allowance of a list of nutrients.
In my honest opinion, these are great because they are a fun way to get kids to drink milk. My 3 year old is mesmerised with the colour change in the milk as it travels through the straw and will drink quite happily. It also puts my mind at ease because I know that she is getting all the benefits of drinking milk, without the inevitable mess and spillage that normally occurs when she drinks a glass of milk.
The price is okay but it does sometimes work out cheaper to buy the powder and make the milkshakes with that, but these straws to provide a means to bypass the "hassles" of making milkshake from scratch.
I will give these 4 stars as I like the idea, the concept is really great and kids seem to like it. I also like the fact that the straws are individually wrapped and are great for when on the move -much less mess than taking a box of powder in the car. My only reason for not giving 5 stars is that there are only 2 flavours, strawberry and chocolate. Not everyone likes these flavours and it would be great if the company could bring out some other flavours - a bit of variety.
So I heartily recommend this product to all you readers and consumers out there - grab a glass of mily and enjoy the magic, no matter what your age!
Thanks for reading. Di xx

- 15/04/08 I don't have to worry about getting my 2 year old to drink milk either. He loves it and can easily get through 3 pints a day! |

- 14/04/08 "On the back of the outer packaging are instructions for the best way to drink milk through these straws" - whatever next!? Surely you pop straw in milk, place straw in mouth and suck!
Great review!
Do they contain a lot of sugar, by the way?
