Advantages: Tastes delicious, low in calories, the perfect mint flavour
Disadvantages: ----------
I do like a nice cup of hot chocolate in the evening but since I joined Weight Watchers last September I've been struggling a little to find a good quality lower fat version, I do like the Options range but the recipe seems to have changed recently and my favourite flavours are not as nice as they used to be.
I first sampled the Skinny Cow hot chocolate when I was sent a sample sachet through the post, it was nice enough but nothing special I thought and not really worth the hike in price compared to Options or Highlights. But then in Sainsbury's I noticed they also make a mint version, and nothing goes better with chocolate in my opinion so I bought a couple of sachets to try.
It's absolutely delicious. The hot chocolate is made with boiling water and I was impressed at how well it mixed, leaving no lumps of claggy powder in the bottom of my cup. I tend to use a small fork for mixing any instant hot chocolate rather than a teaspoon as I find this breaks down the powder much better and gives a smoother end result.
The smell of mint is not overpowering although I was impressed at how strong and full bodied it smelt compared to the inipid aroma of the Mint Options.
As a drink I was surprised at how creamy it tastes, considering this has been made with water rather than milk it manages to attain a much creamier and smoother consistency than most other instant hot chocolates.
You can tell it's a diet hot chocolate as it's thinner than a full fat drink but the flavour is nicely sweet and very chocolately indeed. The mint flavour comes through well and adds a touch more sweetness to really round the drink off. The strength of the mint is perfect in my opinion, some diet hot chocolates go a little overboard on the mint I find but this is not overpowering in the slightest and works to compliment the chocolate flavour perfectly.
I really cannot fault this Skinny Cow hot chocolate at all; it satisfys my craving for something different to tea at night, allows me a little taste of chocolate when dieting doesn't really go hand in hand with this kind of drink and the best news is each mug full will cost you less than 40 calories.
You can buy Skinny Cow hot chocolate in individual sachets or the large tub you can see above which contains ten servings. The sachets cost around 40p each and the tub is £1.99 so it's definitely worth buying the tub if, like me, you will be drinking this regularly.
Summary: A delicious hot chocolate for all you dieters out there!
