Sitting on a shelf in our wardrobe is a twenty-year-old bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale. When I catch sight of it I often wonder if this stuff goes bad. Will the bottle eventually explode all over my clothes perhaps? Will I awake one morning to an awful mess in there? Michael snorts and says not. It's a special edition bottle too, given to all British soldiers who went to the Falklands to fight for Mrs Thatcher those twenty years ago. Before he joined the ranks of the peaceniks and married me, Michael joined her Majesty's ranks (Elizabeth, not Margaret) and he spent his eighteenth birthday in the Falkland Islands, arriving after the fighting but in time ... Newcastle Brown Ale, the beer of choice for the Geordie male (or should I call it Broon Ale). Up here in the grim North East it goes by the name of Dog, and I must admit when I was new to the whole 'pub' thing I was a little surprised to hear people asking for a pint of Dog. Still, that is one of the greatest things about Brown ale; you actually get a pint of it! Anyway, before I get in to the beer itself I need to say a bit about the making of the beer and the history of it. Brewing Process --------------- Firstly selected barley is turned in to malt. This is done by adding water and allowing to germinate, and when it is ... Read the complete review

Sometimes taking up a dare is a bit stupid but not wanting to appear chicken in the face of such a dare I rose to the challenge of actually writing an opinion on that great foe of mine Newcastle Brown Ale or fondly know by it's millions of fans ( not me I add)as Newkie Broon! Rumour had it in Tooyoo circles that I had a particualr fondness for this beverage - you know who you are so I won't name and shame! But to be honest when it comes to beer I'm a girlie lager drinker! Give me a nice gin n tonic and I've very happy thanks all the same! Now the terms of the dare was that I had to not only write an op on the dreaded brown ale but I had to ... Read the complete review

There cannot be many people who have not heard of Newcastle Brown Ale, it is obviously synonymous with Newcastle upon Tyne and has been brewed in the City since 1927 at Newcastle Breweries situated in Barrack Road, Gallowgate opposite St. James Park Football Ground. Newcastle Breweries was opened in 1890 and part of the original brewery is still in use although it has been extended many times over the years. The creator of Newcastle Brown Ale was Jim Porter and he took over three years to perfect the Ale before eventually releasing it. In 1928, only one year after its release it was so popular it won three gold medals in the International Brewers Exhibition in ... Read the complete review

Newcastle Brown has been brewed in Tyne and Wear since 1927. No link has yet been proven but this was also the last year that Newcastle Utd won the football league championship. It's the one drink from behind the bar that's guaranteed to give me a splitting head ache even after just one bottle. The first time this happened I'd already consumed three or four pints of other ales and beers before I began swigging the 'Broon' stuff, so I couldn't be sure whether 'the bottle of dog' as it's also sometimes known, was to blame. Only further dedicated research over the years has left me in no doubt that Newcy Brown is for headbangers. I should have guessed this because the mate ... Read the complete review
