Advantages: Good for your insides, tastes lovely, loads of vitamin 3
Disadvantages: Loads of sugar
My 13 year old son who is a notoriously picky eater asked for a carton of Cranberry Juice last night when we were in Tesco. I looked at all the packages and decided to go towards a trusted name, the Ocean Spray Cranbery classic stood out with its robust cardboard packaging and one of those little white plastic things which lift up to pour and that you can then lock down effectively. I have really gone off those cartons which you have to cut open as they tend to slosh all over the fridge when you have kids slamming the door. Decision made I couldn't get it into the trolley fast enough as he eats no veg, very little fruit and normally drinks coke or Irn bru.
On arrival home he immediately and easily opened the packet and poured himself a drink within a few seconds to my relief he had knocked back ½ pint and claimed it to be really tasty and refreshing. I poured myself a drink and as I raised it a distinct smell arose, like a mixture between red wine and ribena, very fruity. My first taste was of a sweet liquid but that quickly changed to a more tart flavour which was enjoyable. It was very drinkable and you could easily down a full glass in one go.
I have read that cranberries contained a substance which was good for your body and is particularly recommended for anyone suffering from cystitis. On the back of the box is the information that a serving provides 100mg per serving of proanthocyanidins (PACs), nature's natural agents that may help to maintain your health by acting on certain harmful bacteria in the body. Its also free from artificial colours and sweetners.
I checked this fact on line and read from the Ocean Spray website "Scientists suggest that PACs may work by stopping certain bacteria from adhering in the body. If bugs can't stick, then they cannot multiply and cause infection. It's this anti-stick mechanism which is thought to be the key to cranberry's role in helping to maintain urinary tract health".
Another claim from the website is
"This research found that Cranberry Classic's beneficial effect may start within two hours and can last for up to 10 hours in the urine, which suggests that consuming a serving in the morning and one in the evening may provide more effective anti-adhesion protection than consuming one serving a day."
I can't guarantee these facts but I'm sure some food and drink agency keeps an eye on this sort of thing.
100ml contains
Energy 209kj/49kcal
Protein trace
Carbohydrate 11.6g (100% sugars)
Fat trace
Fibre trace
Sodium trace
Vitamin C 30mg (50% of RDA) 1 glass (250ml serving
gives you 125% of your RDA)
As I'm writing this I am sitting with the empty box in front of me as he has drunk the full litre in less than 24 hours, the only other person getting a small glass of it being me. I will definitely be buying this again especially now I've noticed how much vitamin C is in it. Although next time it will need to be a couple of boxes so it'll last a little longer.
The price was £1.06 but they do offers on this type of drink quite often
Summary: If you want to be good to your insides - drink this
