Advantages: Smooth hot chocolate with a good orange flavour, low in calories
Disadvantages: ----------
One of my favourite low fat hot chocolate drinks is the Options Outrageous Orange flavour, I try other brands and flavours but I always have a tub of this in the cupboard - which is testament to how much I love it as I strictly stick to sachets when it comes to hot chocolate as I am easily bored.
This orange one never bores me though, it's an old favourite I return to again and again. Of course it's a thinner drink than a rich hot chocolate made with milk, but it's for dieters and frankly it tastes so good that I'll happily lose a little richness and save a lot of calories!
It's made with water that has been allow to come off the boil for a few minutes, then a good stir will make sure you get no unsavoury black blobs on top of your drink. Unfortunately you can't get them all and this particular flavour seems prone to the odd rogue blob of semi-dissolved powder, even when I am sure I stirred it well suddenly a blob will rise up in my drink - I swear I hear it laughing at me sometimes!
The taste is very good though. The hot chocolate is mildly creamy, although this comes through more in the flavour than in the consistency of the drink. It's a smooth milk chocolate flavour, you can taste that there are sweeteners rather than sugar in it of course but this isn't really a problem as the overall drink is so very tasty.
I like the way Options have been subtle with the orange flavouring so that it mingles really nicely with the chocolate, a lot of hot chocolates seem to go a little overboard with the flavour of orange and that can produce a sickly and overpowering drink in my opinion. Options have, in my opinion, got it spot on.
I have recently started cocktailing my Options sachets and have discovered that a sachet of Outrageous Orange blends beautifully with a sachet of Cracking Hazelnut, it needs stirring for ages to get the two sachets to combine in the hot water - but the elbow grease it well worth it as the sweet orange taste mixes with the delicious nuttiness of the hazelnut drink.
If you have the tub of Outrageous Orange Options you'll find a cup will 'cost' you just 40 calories and 1.1g of fat, providing of course you make it up as directed on the tub. If you particularly like this flavour as I do, it's far more economical to buy the tub rather than the sachets as a 220g jar is currently on offer at £1.95 in Sainsbury's and will make 20 mugs of this lovely drink.
Summary: A delicious low calorie hot chocolate drink with the added benefit of a lovely orange flavouring.
