... off the competition from rival companies. THE CIDER MAKING PROCESS Before I give you my own opinions, let me give you a brief overview of the cider making process. Before the fermentation process can begin, Magners select and grade the apples. Only the highest quality apples are used and these are then sent for pressing, where they are reduced to pulp and their juices extracted. Incredibly, the same presses used 50 years ago are still used today to make Magners! This shows the company's determination to keep the her...more

Crowned Review Other Ciders: Would you like some apples with your ethanol? (817 words)

As my premiere beer review seems to have gone down rather well, I thought it might be high time I turned my attention to doing a cider review properly. That is, to write it before I've already drunk a can or two of the stuff! My choice for this honour is a little known brew that I picked up from my local Safeway, lurking in the real ale section - Symonds 1727 Extra Strong Fine Cider. Being in this section it is not just your common or garden cider (they are shelved along with your branded lagers), but rather, for want of a better term, a "real" cider. Something a bit special. The apple equivalent of those independent and real ale beers that tange and ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Cider with lemons sing the bells... (822 words)

... oh, alright, perhaps they don't. But with the aid of a more diverse category on dooyoo theediscerning is able to sing the praises, or otherwise, of a cider flavoured with lemongrass. Let him introduce you to it first. It goes by the name of "Cider with lemongrass", and is a Weston's Original, which means very little to theediscerning, but a bit more to the Weston family, who set up shop in 1880. This brew is bottle-only, it would appear, and has only been found so far in JS in the High Street, as one of those top-shelf (ie expensive) ciders that, however, seems to have permanently 30p off. The 500ml bottle is a clear glass one, ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Other Ciders: Marvellous Magners (864 words)
by - written on 26/08/06 (Very useful, 182 readings)
Rating:

I am not a big drinker of alcoholic beverages but do like the occasional bottle of cider. A colleague at work recommended Magners Irish Cider. Although I had heard of Magners, it was not a brand which I was used to drinking because I tend to buy brands like Strongbow and Woodpecker. However, on a recent shopping trip, I spotted bottles of Magners on the shelf so thought I'd opt for one of these instead. PACKAGING You can buy Magners in bottle or can format. I chose to buy a 568ml bottle from Tesco which cost me £1.99. The bottle is very traditional-looking. It is tall and made from brown glass, with an eye-catching green and yellow label on the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review I am so embarrased by this drink, but I will tell you about ... (443 words)

When I started drinking Cider was all my group of friends and I had. We started when we were 16. I know we were underage, but tell me who doesn't drink underage? Nowadays I hear about 12 and 13 year olds downing straight Vodka, which is serious. Anyway the reason we all drank Cider was because it was so cheap, you got loads for the money, it was alcoholic and it made us happy - and some of us drunk. I never got drunk with it as I can take alcohol well, but unfortunatly with Cider it made me very, very sick! Every saturday night this was the ritual for us. Me and one other person was nominated to go into the off licence as we both looked older and got served ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Other Ciders: Diamond White - For The Worst Hangover Ever! (391 words)

Launched in 1986, Diamond White is one of those alcoholic beverages which you tend to consume when you are looking to get drunk - it also taste quite nice as well. Its a little on the dry side as ciders go, but it has to be said that it is one of the better ones out there and one of the most popular - at least among younger drinker. Apparently its popularity means that one in two licensed premises stocks Diamond White in the UK and it is consumed regularly by around 1 in 5 of all 18-24 year olds - impressive statistics indeed. That said, its not something wich I would recommend to everyone though for a couple of reasons. Firstly, at 8.4% ABV its rather on the ...  Read the complete review
