Harp lager is as Irish as a taco. Yes they make tacos in Eire. They also sell and eat them there, but they hardly qualify as an Irish product.

Harp is a pleasant enough lager, and does indeed 'stay sharp to the bottom of the glass', but don't be kidded into thinking that the streets of Dublin are filled with misty eyed old men reminiscing over their first pint of Harp.

The Liffey does not run gold with Harp. It is a drinkable lager, and you can get drunk on it, but if you want a taste of Ireland stick with Guinness or even try Caffreys.

If you were convinced that American Budweiser was a quality beverage by young men shouting wassssuuuup, then you are sure to be impressed by the Irishness of this product. Personally I prefer to take my drinking advice from reptiles, but then after a few beers I often wind up dating them.

By American standards it is reasonably strong at 4.1% - a strength that puts it firmly in the teenagers and swillers lager bracket, right up there with Carling Black Label.

It tastes OK, a little thin. The colour is thin. It's gassy, it fills you up and makes you burp - a lot!

To really enjoy lager you need to try the more complex flavourful brews coming from central and eastern Europe. To enjoy cheap but tasty draft try something from Germany, Holland, or heaven forbid, France.

Simple rules for the beer gourmet: If you want full thick stout then Celtic nations are a great place to look. Hoppy bitters are best in northern Europe, but for lager head east young man +/or elderly woman!
