Advantages: nice packaging, vitamins and minerals
Disadvantages: lumpy, flavourless, powdery
I think this stuff is meant to be for kids but never mind I bought it for me!
I love Crusha milkshape syrup but that's all it really is; syrup! So when I spotted this in Home Bargains for £1 I thought I'd give it a try especially as all the blurb on the front led me to believe it was good for you.
The RRP for this drink is around £1.99 and the 300g tub contains around 15 servings.
In a little yellow circle on the label it claims this stuff, Max for Milk is/contains:
11 Vitamins and Minerals
No Artificial colours or sweeteners
Low in Fat
Max for Milk Strawberry is a 'Daily Nutrition' drink from Ovaltine, It comes in the form of a pink powder of which you add 3-4 spoons of to one glass of milk.
You can also get Max for Milk in chocolate or banana flavour.
Like Ovaltine, Milk for Max is 'Made with the wholesome goodness of Barley and Malt'.
The packaging is mostly pale blue, it's in the same shape tub as Ovaltine and has the Ovaltine branding at the top. The lid of the tub is bright pink and there is a picture of s little boy by a huge glass of pink milk with his thumb up!
I'm guessing the lids and packaging colours vary with the other flavours.
Overall really cool packaging, top marks to Ovaltine's design team as I can this product would really appeal to kids, it appealed to me.
Directions: Mix 3-4 teaspoons of powder with a little milk to make a smooth paste and then fill your glass with milk and stir until smooth.
This sounds all good and simple but the problem is this stuff doesn't go smooth, I made the paste as directed and then poured in my milk but it just went into big lumps!
I stirred it for ages, at least 2 minutes and the lumps just weren't disappearing so I sieved it into a clean glass!
Sorted, I thought and took a big gulp, eughh! It tasted all powdery and there was no sign of a strawberry taste, I could feel the powder on my tongue and it actually made my mouth feel dry. Disgusting, It tasted a bit like cold Ovaltine probably would but its meant to be strawberry!!
It does taste like its good for you, in other words bland and powdery, not a hint of sweetness or fruitiness.
Good luck getting your kids to drink this, I'm not trying it out on my poor nephews; they've never done anything THAT wrong to me! lol.
So to see just how good for you it is I'm going to compare it with the Crusha I have in my cupboard:
Max for Milk contains per 20g serving: 3.5g fat, 17.6g of sugars and 173 calories.
(in 200ml of semi skimmed milk)
Crusha contains per 25ml serving: 3g fat, 17g of sugars and 119 calories.
(in 175ml of semi skimmed milk)
The vitamins and minerals Max Milk contains: Vitamins: A, C, E, B1, B2, B6, B12, Niacin, Folic acid, Biotin and Pantothen.
Minerals: Calcium, Phosphorus, Magnesium and Zinc.
So apart from the vitamins and minerals in Max for Milk, the two are very similar in the nutritional info but Crusha just tastes tonnes better!!
So aslong as your kids are getting their vitamins in other ways I'd recommend Crusha all the way! I really don't think children will drink lumpy powdery milk!
I've always loved Ovaltine and so am disappointed with this, their latest offering. The idea is there but they just need to make it taste something like it's meant to.
If this drink was made to taste better I bet it would be loved by parents everywhere as a way to get those important vitamins and minerals into your child; kids love milkshakes and see them as a treat!
Summary: Good idea, Bad product
