When poured it is cola colour with a beige head, the head hangs around for a reasonable time and the drink is not too fizzy but has some carbonation which seems to last a long time too. One of the most impressive Estonian dark beer, perhaps the brewery's own description of a "velvety" taste is actually plausible. I like the way that the malt isn't emphasised but takes a nice backseat to the overall rich, roasted flavour. Everything seems to be in moderation...more

Toolse and Palmse are part of the same Viru range, Toolse is an old castle near to the brewery whilst Palmse is a more regal grandiose manor. Palmse keep the tradition of red labels on dark beers and have a nice little picture of the manor of the same name on it. At 5.6% the beer is a tad stronger than Toolse and that applies not only to its ABV but also the flavour. When poured it is cola colour with a beige head, the head hangs around for a reasonable time and the drink is not too fizzy but has some carbonation which seems to last a long time too.
