Advantages: A nice cup of tea but minus the caffeine
Disadvantages: The end result does taste a little different to my usual cuppa
I drink an awful lot of tea through the day, I sleep terribly but as I rarely drink coffee I didn't give a thought to the caffeine contained in my numerous daily cuppa's. It was during a general health check that my consultant decided he wanted a quick run down of my eating and drinking habits so he could see if there was anything that could be eliminated from my diet to aid various health problems.
The one thing he picked up on straight away was the amount of tea I drink, he's an avid tea lover himself and recommended I try PG Tips Decaffeinated teabags as those are the ones he drinks himself. He assured me there is very little difference between the taste of full caffeine and decaffeinated tea so on the way home I popped into Sainsbury's and picked up a box.
The ones I bought were the pyramid variety as I have heard that decaffeinated tea bags are a little weaker than normal tea and I thought the pyramid shape would help the leaves to circulate better.
I do find they need a longer brewing time, both in the tea pot and also when brewed individually in a mug. I had to squeeze the bag against the side of the mug more times than usual and stir more frequently to get a cup of tea of adequate strength, but once made I thought the tea was very nice indeed.
I added my milk as usual and confess I could taste a slight difference between this and my usual PG Tips, it's not that the tea is any weaker but the overall flavour is certainly not as fully rounded. It's perfectly fine though and I think that once I've drunk a box or two of the teabags then I'll cease to notice this subtle difference in much the same way as I get used to the new flavour when I change teabag brand for whatever reason.
I can't say that my sleeping is much better since swapping to decaffeinated teabags, perhaps I find it a little easier to doze off in the first place but this could be a combination of different techniques I have been advised to try. I'll stick with it though as after sixty years of drinking full caffeine tea I've probably developed something of a tolerance to it so it will take more than eight days worth of decaff to make a difference!
Summary: A good cup of tea, unfortunately lacking the full flavour of my usual tea.
