Advantages: Tastes exactly the same, cheaper
Disadvantages: No caffeine!!!
I love tea but due to the fact that I am pregnant I have now switched to decaf tea for the time being. I love the taste of normal tea so was quite worried that any decaf I did choose was not going to taste as good or taste like something was missing.
The normal tea that I drink is PG tips to I was anxious to see if they did a decaf variety. I use the pyramid tea bags for convenience so was also hoping that they did a variety in decaf too.
I was happy to find that yes, PG tips do do a decaf tea bags variety.
PG Tips is a brand of tea, produced in the United Kingdom and it's my favourite brand of tea. I like it because it has a nice, fresh taste to it and is not as strong as some teas such as Yorkshire tea. It is referred to as the all natural drink as it's made from only the tips of the tea plant, hence the name. The tips are actually the top two leaves and the buds which means this tea is completely made from tea leaves and nothing else. I think this is what gives it its great fresh flavour and why apparently, according to Unilever who manufacture the tea, Britons drink 35 million cups of PG tips a day!! Definitely a favourite in this country with other people apart from me!
The PG portion of the name came way back when the tea was first produced. It was first launched by Brook Bond in 1930 who called it Digestive, as it was claimed to be an aid to digestion. When this was regulated after the Second World War they changed the name to Pre-Gest-Tee (meaning Pre-digestive tea) and was eventually shortened to PG!
The PG tips decaf tea bags are in exactly the same packaging as the regular tea-bags except that they have a portion of the box that is red to distinguish between the two different varieties. I like the red as it is in the design of a beautiful sunset and I think it makes the box look very appealing. I generally like to buy big boxes of tea because we go through them so quickly in our house but unfortunately the biggest box of decaf bags that you can buy is the 250g box which holds 80 bags. You can also buy the 125g box that holds 40 tea bags but I find this only lasts a week or so so it is not worth it in my opinion. I found it interesting that 80 decaf bags costs £2.06 whereas 80 regular bags are a little bit more expensive at £2.19, not sure what the difference is but nice to know I am saving money during my pregnancy.
Another great thing about PG tips is that they are now Rainforest Certified minimum 50% and are working towards being 100% certified. This means that the tea inside their box is grown using sustainable farming methods, the people who pick it earn a better living and their families have access to education and medical care. For me, yes it's just a little thing but by buying this tea you can make a difference and change things a little bit to make the world a better place so that's another bonus of this tea.
So, onto the taste, did it taste any different to regular PG tips tea bags? Well, I'm pleased to announce that they taste exactly the same, no funny after taste, no taste of something missing which I'm very glad about!
Tea is a very good drink for you and has quite a lot of health benefits. Without milk, a cup of tea has less the 1 calorie in it and nil fat, nil sugars so if you're making a cup of tea, make it PG Tips!

- 25/07/09 It's never the same without the caffeine, somehow. A bit like alcohol-free beer. |
