Advantages: Tastes nice, refreshing
Disadvantages: expensive
Pimm's was first introduced in 1823 by James Pimm (hence the name) and is now owned by diageo. It is most common in the UK especially in southern areas; it is a gin based alcoholic drink. The most common Pimm's is No 1 which is gin based, there were also another 5 but have been phased out these were rum, vodka, whiskey, brandy and rye.
Pimm's for some reason has always been associated with wealth, I'm just trying to remember the adverts, this involved a posh speaking man with the quotation it's pimm's o'clock. It is said to be very commonly drank at Wimbledon and Henley royal Regatta. You will often think of pimm's being drunk at a summer wedding or an afternoon in the garden, but does this really happen?
A 70cl bottle of Pimm's is brought for around £12.47 you can also get a litre bottle and they do sell it in small cans that are already mixed with lemonade. I think Pimm's is fairly expensive considering you do have to use quite a lot if it to dilute it with your choice of mixer unlike a bottle of whiskey of gin where you only use small amounts at a time. A bottle of Pimm's really wouldn't last you that long! It is 25% strength which is quite a nice volume of alcohol in my opinion as it's not as strong as the high spirits but higher than wine of beer so in between.
We only have a bottle at home at the moment as a friend brought it as the shop he went to didn't have vodka! I don't know if that makes sense to you as it didn't to us! The bottle itself is great like most alcoholic bottles as you can recycle it after use; to me this is always a plus. The design in my opinion does look quite regal with the clear royal red writing and the gold crown above the name. On the back of the bottle it does tell you that you should mix it 1 part pimm's and 3 parts lemonade, which I feel, is the nicest way to drink it. We have been to a few summer weddings which they have served this on entrance to the reception and it's always gone down rather well. They always served it with ice and bits of fruit like lemon, lime and strawberries it does really give you the summer feeling as it's very refreshing to drink. I do tend to take the fruit out and put it in my wife's glass as i don't like fruit in my drinks to me it's not a good combination.
The drink itself is a dark brown colour almost the same colour as whiskey, when you mix it with the lemonade it does go lighter making it look slightly more appetising! When opening the lid you get a really spicy smell with a hint of fruit, which is not too offensive. How many of you shudder when smelling a spirit like whiskey neat it really to me isn't that appetising and doesn't make you want to drink it. When I first had some pimm's I thought it was a bit of a girls drink, but will occasionally have some now, although I wouldn't go down my local and ask for a Pimm's and lemonade it's just at weddings and if a bottles at home! I like mine with just lemonade and ice, I hate fruit in drinks to me it's not right. When drinking it is very smooth and easy to drink, with the lemonade you can really taste more of the fruitiness in it and it doesn't taste spicy at all which you are lead to believe by the smell. It doesn't give you that after kick taste that you get from drinking other drinks it in my opinion is a more relaxing drink where you can actually enjoy the taste. Like other spirits I can never understand how people can enjoy drinking them for pleasure. The only think I have found is that on having a drink of the bottle my friend left you don't actually realise how much you are drinking as they go down so well. The next thing you know the alcoholic content will hit you! So be warned although its 25% volume of alcohol and you have it mixed with 3 parts lemonade its still alcohol don't be fooled by the pleasant and not to overpowering alcoholic taste.
Overall in my opinion pimm's is a really nice relaxing and refreshing drink to drink, especially in the summer. It's best with lemonade, ice and fruit if you like it this way and you drink it as a long drink. It really will refresh you in hot weather but probably in my opinion no more than a nice cold beer. Pimm's is quite expensive to buy and I really wouldn't buy it in the supermarket, personally I would rather opt for some beers or wine as to me are cheaper and just as enjoyable to drink if not more. I've enjoyed the bottle my friend left, Cheers!
Summary: A nice drink but wouldn't go out my wasy to buy it
