Advantages: Really tasty, good for you, nice colour
Disadvantages: Expensive
I love fruit juice and I always like to try new flavours so when I saw Pomegreat on sale it really caught my eye. The packaging is yellow and a kind of deep burgundy/red and manages to look both retro and modern and the same time. Upon further examination of the, (recyclable), carton I notice the logo for H.E.A.R.T. UK - The Cholesterol charity and "assumed" that the juice would help those with a cholesterol problem, (the other half recently had a test following his Dad's triple bypass operation and discovered he has inherited the problem), so I popped a carton in the trolley.
After I got this home and read the packaging, (no small feat - it is covered with text), I discovered that Pomegreat made no specific claims about the benefits for your health or your cholesterol. I have looked at the website too and the closest you get to a claim of any health benefit is the line, "Recent scientific research has unveiled the incredible nutritional benefits of the pomegranate and has been thus called a Superfruit... This refers to the fact that this rare exotic fruit has exceptional nutrient richness, antioxidant quality or appealing taste". It doesn't even appear to make that much sense, (is an appealing taste a health benefit)? However; H.E.A.R.T. UK does approve this product as "part of a healthy heart diet" and it would seem that Pomegreat donated 25% of their profits from 2006 to the charity.
If you want to find out more about the potential health benefits try wikipedia as everywhere I looked they were using a lot of medical jargon that would have been a nightmare to explain, (or even understand)!
This is a fruit juice drink made with a blend of pomegranate juice, aronia berry juice, (also known as chokeberries - these berries are very bitter, hence the name chokeberry, and need to be cooked before use but they are very high in antioxidants and vitamin C), water, fruit extract concentrate, flavourings, vitamins A, C and E and folic acid. (50% RDA of A, C & E and 100% RDA of folic acid per 250ml serving).
You need to drink this stuff really cold; I normally don't drink anything cold due to sensitive teeth but this drink even looks better cold. When poured ice cold it has a lovely ruby colour and is clear but when warmer it is cloudy and looks like a dirty claret colour. The smell is strange and quite hard to describe, it is a little sweet and perfumed but not too much so. In all honesty it probably smells of pomegranates but I haven't smelt one recently, (far too fiddly to eat).
The taste is wonderful being quite dry and refreshing. There is a hint of sweetness noticeable but it is not a sweet drink, which I love as I think that too many soft drinks are too sweet. This goes wonderfully well with food in a similar way that rose wine goes well with food. Truly the taste and smell of this drink are unique and definitely worth trying at least once.
Price wise this can be a little expensive especially if purchased a "local" shop rather than a supermarket. In my local shop it costs a £1.59 a litre and at Asda costs £1.48 a litre.
I love Pomegreat and I have even started to drink 250ml a day!
Summary: A tasty drink made using pomegranates.
