Ribena Blackcurrant

I have always loved trying new soft drinks however sometimes it's just easy to go back to a firm faverouite. One of my absolute faverouite is Ribena Blackcurrant. I have always found this drink tasty and refreshing and throughout my student days this was my hang over drink of choice.

What is Ribena?

Ribena is a brand of fruit juices. The fruit juices are uncarbonated or in other words are not fizzy. Ribena has a number of different products such as the 500ml ready to drink bottle. This comes in blackcurrant flavour, strawberry, raspberry and pomegranate and cranberry with blackcurrant.

Other products in the Ribena range include boxes of juice. In orange, apple, strawberry and blackcurrant flavour. They also have bottle of diluted juice or squash. Ribena have also introduced a 100% fruit juice range which when consumed counts as one of your five a day portions.

What does it cost?

In Tesco a 500 ml bottle of the ready to drink juice will set you back 88 pence. They currently have an offer on where by you can buy two bottles for £1.60. Each bottle is rich in vitamin C. A 100 ml serving contains 51 calories and a pretty high 12.2grams of sugar. This is a higher sugar content than coca cola which has 10.6 grams for the same amount.

My opinion

Despite the fact that it's got a very high sugar content I still love this stuff. Following a rather painful visit to the dentist however I have tried to cut back on my consumption and I don't tend to drink as much of the stuff. They do have a lighter version and I have bought it in the past however in my opinion it's a bit to watery and not as nice as the full blackcurrant flavour.

The bottle is 100 % recycled and they used to have an advert saying that 95% of all Irish blackcurrants go to make Ribena. Im not sure if that's true but you have to feel sorry for the 5% left out.

The blackcurrant taste is fantastic from the bottle and extremely refreshing. On a warm summers day its hard to get the level of immediate thirst satisfaction that you receive from a bottle of this stuff. As mention earlier I find that this product is an excellent hang over drinks. Possibly due to the vitamins in it replacing some that you loose drinking alcohol. Overall this tasty product and well worth treating yourself to every once in a while.

Summary: Great blackcurrant drink

Many years ago my husband used to work for Beechams and he could buy the concentrated juice bottles by the box for peanuts. I loved it but I think my teeth paid the price too! x
