Advantages: Vitamin C content
Disadvantages: Doesn't quench thirst much
I used to have Ribena a lot when I was little, both having it at home diluted from a bottle and having it in the little cartons with straws attached in my lunch box when I went on school trips. These days I always have water with me because I often get thirsty whilst out and about but the other day I wanted something different. When I went into Superdrug they had a BOGOF offer on the Ribena bottles which were £1.13 each so you got 500ml for the price of a carton effectively. I thought I hadn't had Ribena in about six months so I decided to get some and I bought this the original one and a strawberry version.
This has the familiar Ribena logo on the front and a deep purple bottle with some luscious looking blackcurrants in front of some rich greenery. Their bottles always look good and really vibrant and colourful. However they have this silly competition on the front advising you that you can win an inflatable person to put in the office. It's a bit strange and not a competition with a very high entry rate I might imagine. As with the strawberry version I was shocked to find that this bottle contained 60% of the daily sugar allowance. Were I to have a child who wanted a drink in their lunchbox I would be wary of giving them this often because of the effect it may have on their teeth. Moreover, the nutritional stats they give are for an adult so proportionally it would be even worse for a child.
The liquid inside is a rich berryish dark purple and the smell is immediately recognisable as Ribena. I think I would recognise the smell blindfolded actually. The taste was sweet and had a true taste of berries though it didn't have the sharp zing that the fruit may have in real life which is probably a good things as the bitterness would likely put people off. Though I enjoy the taste of this drink what I don't like is that it didn't seem to solve my thirst problem and I had to have water afterwards anyway. Perhaps this is because the drink is too concentrated I don't know.
Would I buy it again? Maybe. It doesn't solve the thirst problem but it's nice for the sake of it.
Summary: Nice now and again

- 02/08/09 I keep forgetting that Super Drug stock soft drinks. Thanks for the reminder. As you say, Ribena is nice 'now and again.' |
