Advantages: A long lasting concentrated fruit drink
Disadvantages: Fresh juice or fresh fruit is better.
Ribena is a thick syrupy concentrated drink with added vitamin C. It's been around for decades. You are recommended to dilute 1 part (30ml) of Ribena with at least 5 parts (150ml) of water. A bottle of Ribena is designed to last. The strong blackcurrant taste is tangy and satisfying and the juice retains a dark blackcurrant colour when diluted.
Ribena is a very sugary drink and can be bad for your teeth if drank all the time. There is a so-called 'Toothkind' version that has lower added sugar so therefore kinder to your teeth - especially good for children, although this is not suitable for children under 36 months.
Ribena is also available in various packages and forms at most of the main supermarkets. The most common are Ribena Original/Ribena Really Light at about £2.40 for a litre and Ribena Original or Ribena Really Light at £1.70 for a 600ml bottle.
I would just about recommend this product. It is essentially a convenience food, but convenience foods are not always bad. Relying on fresh fruit juice for your vitamin C intake everyday can be expensive and Ribena Original Blackcurrant is at the quality end of the convenience food market. However, I would still recommend that people get their source of vitamin C from fresh fruit and vegetables. There is much debate as to how long vitamin C can be stored in liquid form and I am always suspicious of the claims made by convenience food manufacturers regarding the added nutrient contents.
