Advantages: Tastes great
Disadvantages: High sugar content
Most people remember the taste of the classic soft drink Ribena. It is a blackcurrant concentrated juice drink.
It is bottled in a see through plastic bottle. You can see the rich purple blackcurrant juice through the bottle. The top of the bottle is a screw top which has been sealed with gold foil. The great thing is that the packaging is environmentally friendly. The bottle is made from 100% recycled plastic. The cap is made from plastic which is not from a recycled source and the label is made from paper. The bottle can be recycled afterwards.
The juice is very easy to prepare and there are clear instructions on the bottle on how to prepare the drink for best results. Dilute 1 part (50ml) squash with at least 4 parts water to give a 250ml serving.
The juice itself is a very deep purple colour. It is more like a syrup than a liquid. The smell of the Ribena is lovely. It is sweet and smells of blackcurrants. One important thing to note Ribena is not suitable for children under 3 years old. I persume this is due to the sugar content of the juice.
The Drink it makes is very tasty. You can really taste the blackcurrants. The flavour is more 'real' than other blackcurrant juices. This is probably because it contains real fruit juice. It is very sweet and very moreish. The juice is made from super fruits so it contains plenty of goodness. It is rich in vitamin C which is a powerful antioxidant. The juice does not contain any artificial colours, flavours or sweeteners.
After you have opened the bottle it must be stored in the fridge and drunk within 21 days.
Each 250ml diluted serving contains:Calories 115 , Sugar 27.8g , Fat Nil 0%, Saturates Nil, Salt Trace.
The bottle I purchased was 1 litre. It was on special offer 2 bottles for £3.50.
Its normal price is £2.44
There are other size bottles available. You can also get Ribena light.
Additional info taken from the bottle:
Ingredients
(After Dilution), Water, Sugar, Glucose Fructose Syrup, Blackcurrant Juice from Concentrate (5%), Citric Acid, Vitamin C, Preservatives (Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Bisulphite, Colour (Anthocyanins), Product before dilution contains 22% juice
Summary: The best blackcurrant drink around in my opinion!
