Advantages: Good Flavour

Disadvantages: Expensive

As fruit squashes go, I would imagine that Ribena is the old man of the pack. The product has been available since 1936 - although it was only named Ribena in 1938.

I used to drink Ribena a lot in my childhood - it must have been the squash of choice in my household. One thing I appreciate about the drink is the fact that it doesn't contain artificial sweeteners, which I really can't stand the taste of. That said, nowadays, I rarely buy Ribena - mainly due to the fact that there is an excellent Robinson's 'Hi-Juice' range which also only consists of natural sugars.

When I went to the local Tesco last week, for some reason they didn't have any Hi-Juice in stock, so I thought I would give Ribena another go - having not tried it for around five or six years.

From Tesco, the 600ml bottle costs £1.76, the 1litre bottle is £2.00, and the 2litre bottle comes to £4.28.

On tasting the squash I wasn't immediately impressed - however, on subsequent drinkings, I seem to have adjusted to the flavour. I think it's one of those drinks where it's important to get the ratio of Ribena to water spot on - as it doesn't taste that nice if it's too weak.

Containing no artificial colours, flavours or sweeteners, Ribena is certainly a great choice for those who are looking to cut the amount of the potentially harmful aspartame sweetener from their diet. Yes, Ribena is more likely to cause cavities due to its sugar content - but I would rather have a chemical free drink than one which houses a little sugar.

All in all, I would probably buy Ribena again - In my opinion it's not as nice as the Hi-Juice blackcurrant - but it's a close run thing.

Summary: Nice Tasting Fruit Drink
