Advantages: Very sweet, great taste
Disadvantages: Very exensive
I'm a big fan of diluting 'squash' drinks, as I don't like the taste of water alone, and find that the only way I can drink enough water daily, is to mix it with a flavoured drink. Of these, the most well-known is definately Ribena.
It is a blackcurrant flavoured squash, which you mix with water to taste. It has quite a thick, syrupy texture, and is very sweet smelling. I find mixing it with around 4 parts water to 1 part juice is the best mixture, but even then, I still find it very sweet, and can't drink too much of it at once.
I have seen mums put this in baby bottles, or dip dummies in it - I'm guessing this works due to the sweetness of the drink, but have never tried it myself. However, I will say that Ribena heated up is an absolute God-sned when you're ill. I'm not a fan of the Lemsip drinks etc, but when dying with the cold, hot Ribena is lovely and sweet and really does make yu feel better!
Despite it's amazing sweetness and consistency, the drink contains no artificial sweetners etc, so is propably one of the best sqaush drinks for you, although this does come at a price.
It is definately one of the most expensive soft drinks on the market, coming in at around £3.50 for a medium sized bottle of concentrate. This is a huge jump from the similar supermarket-own brands which come in at under £1 for a larger bottle. However, these similar brands do not come close in taste and quality to the Ribena, so you do get what you pay for. I find that I can get a bottle much more cheaply in Farmfoods etc, and you often find that they do offers such as 30% extra free in a bottle.
Overall, I do enjoy Ribena, and would generally go for the concentrate before the 'pre-mixed' bottles, as the concentrate seems to offer better value for money. However, it is an expensive soft drink, and not something I'd buy all the time.
Summary: A nice tasting soft drink, expensive though!

- 27/01/09 I do like this but try as I might I can never get it to taste like the pre-mixed ready to drink Ribena. As for dipping babies dummies into this stuff, that is a horrendous practice!! - colin |
