Advantages: Source of vitamin C, smooth taste
Disadvantages: can't think of one!
Is there anyone in Britain who didn't grow up drinking Ribena? Going on school trips, with your lunchbox packed up with your sandwiches, Wagon Wheel, crisps, and the chunky cardboard drinks box, with the little straw you had to poke into the top to get to the blackcurrant-y goodness within!
Ah, those were the days. These days though, it seems that the only time I ever really drink the Brand, is through the carbonated bottles you can get from cold drinks shelves. Every now and then though, I will go back to the cordial version, especially if I'm feeling poorly.
Ribena's original and most common variety, is the blackcurrant version, which contains real juice in it. Due to this, there are high levels of vitamin C to be found in the drink, a key component to aiding recuperation. Apparently it is also good for the nation's farmers, as nearly all the blackcurrants grown in the UK go into making Ribena!
These days there is a wide range of different types of Ribena available, from strawberry to blueberry, and there are even 'light' versions available. I tend to prefer these light versions as they are not quite as thick and sweet as the regular version, so can be a bit more hydrating.
Not to say that the original version isn't, but it tends to be quite thick and syrupy, and even though it is fairly sweet, there is also that kind of bitter tang that you get from blackcurrants, which tends to be slightly drying on the mouth.
That said, it is a very smooth drink, and tastes very rich, making you feel that you are getting good value for money compared to some other weaker cordials.
I hope that Ribena lasts for a long time, and that more and more generations get to grow up on its goodness!
Summary: The original and best blackcurrant cordial, and a good source of Vitamin C!
