The release of the film Shrek II has brought in its wake an array of all things bogey coloured (because that?s the colour of ogres) and whilst browsing around Sainsbury?s the other day in spending mode, because my little one had just swam her first solo length of the local pool (front and back) and was being treated, we came across a pukey green coloured bottle of Ribena, and the cries of ?can we have it mum?? just for once didn?t get answered with a straight ?No!? so £2.58 later we are the proud owners of a bottle of green stuff.

Now being a Shrek related product, not only is it very green it has pictures of Shrek on it and a competition on it to win a donkey. The bottle is the usual Ribena shaped one and was only available in the smaller size.

So we get home and everyone wants a try, so find some glasses and pour a small amount in each one, as it is supposed to be concentrated. Unlike the regular blackcurrant Ribena, which is very concentrated this actually appeared quite diluted when it came out of the bottle but the bottle and a quick taste assured me it wasn?t, so I just put the normal amount in.

Now according to the bottle it is supposed to taste like apple and pear, the smell is very strongly of an artificial apple, the sort of smell that you get with the apple flavoured boiled sweets, but that didn?t put us off and so off to the tap to fill up with water.

With regular Ribena I actually find it very thirst quenching and refreshing can easily gulp down a half pint very quickly, sadly I didn?t find the pukey green Shrek version quite as refreshing, the first taste was quite nice, a strong mixture of artificial apple and pear, but it did leave a bit of an aftertaste, and I?m not that keen on all things artificial, if anything though for me the apple far outweighed the pear.

Anyway the idea behind dooyoo is to get a balanced opinion so I will now hand over to Emily (age 7) to give her opinions (I have decided not to
correct her spelling):

My opinion is that it tastes more like Pear Juice though really Strong. It tasts wonderful it has Apple Jucie in and I expect youd like it. It?s the colour of Shreks skin, because I don?t know any of you I don?t know if you like it, or know Shrek .Ellen my sister says its Marvelus. I hope I can write again.

So now to Ellen (age 5) (dictated!)

It tastes like apple juice a little bit and it tastes very nice, and I like the picture on the front.

Now the boring stuff, its 8 calories and 0 fat for 150ml

So as usual, the kids love it and the parents take a more adult approach. Would I buy it again, well I can safely say no, much to the outrage of the 3 kids in the family (the two I?ve quoted and apparently now he?s read this, the husband)
I?ve given it 3 stars, it was ok, quite artificial and everyone else liked it, but it was a bit too strong and sweet for me.

And to end of course with the biggest question of all:

Did we win the Donkey? well the honest answer is I have no idea, it was one of these things where you have to pull the label off and look underneath, could I get the label off ? absolutely no chance, stuck solid (and no, I?m nowhere near clever enough to think about trying to steam it off), I took a knife to it in the end and the thing was so badly shredded I stood no chance of reading if I had or hadn?t so knowing my luck I would have won a unique solid gold donkey worth millions, oh well.
