Advantages: Flavour, convenient, lasts a long time
Disadvantages: Not particularly healthy
Ahh...Robinson's Orange Squash, the stuff childhood is made out of! Or at least mine...
Robinson's is probably best known for this drink, which is a heavily concentrated orange juice that you mix with water to reduce its strength. Some people like to add just a touch to flavour their water, whereas I pour about a fifth to a quarter of a glass in to make it stronger.
It does taste very artificial, and there would be no mistaking it with actual orange juice despite its almost convincing yellow-y orange colour. It comes in different sized bottles, the smallest being about a litre which will last for a good many glassfuls as you need to add so little. This in turn means that not as much packaging is required, a definite plus in my opinion.
The one thing that my friend abroad wanted us to bring when we went to visit was this orange squash!! Apparently they don't sell it in Italy and he really wanted some. So poor Italians, they are missing out :P
This drink is definitely marketed as a family drink, with the kind of summer picnics and weekend advertising linked to it. If I had to pick a few products that reminded me of Britain today, I think Robinson's orange squash would be quite high up.
The bottle I have claims it has no added sugar which is also a plus. However, this obviously isn't anywhere near as good for you or your children as plain water or fresh juice. But on the other hand, it gives you some flavour and is better than fizzy drinks. Overall, mid range on the health scale.
Robinson's also do a blackcurrant version of this drink which my sister used to have all the time as a kid; however I prefer this orange flavour.
Summary: A great British drink
