Advantages: Fantastic unique taste

Disadvantages: Not widely available

Rodenbach is a traditional Belgian sour ale from Flanders. It is aged for two years in oak casks, an exceptionally long ageing peroid for a beer, which adds a wine-like quality to the beer and accounts for the fruity, vinous taste.

Attractively bottled in dark glass, the beer pours a rich ruby red into the glass with a dense head of foam. It has a fruity, almost wine-like aroma which lets you know that this is no ordinary common lager beer.

The taste is initially much like the smell. Vine fruits and a dry sweetness are prevalent giving way to sour undertones and a crisp, refreshing hoppy bitterness at the end. I have enjoyed Rodenbach both cold and at warmer room temperature, and generally it is probably better to enjoy this style of beer at room temperatures to allow all the flavours to be enjoyed.

For those of you who want a slightly different style of beer with a very unique taste then Rodenbach is highly recommended. It makes a good companion to rich meat dishes and is easily available to buy in northern France and throughout Belgium.

Summary: Very nice traditional Belgian beer
