Advantages: Cheaper than top brands, equal in taste
Disadvantages: Still a little more expensive than some colas on the market
For me personally, sainsbury's classic diet cola is the best substitute on the market for diet coke/diet pepsi.
I always prefer diet colas as they don't have the cloying taste that 'fat cokes' have, from all the sugar. But, I don't think anyone in the current financial climate can justify the prices you pay for the top cola brands these days.
What makes the classic cola a good substitute is several things. It has a great refreshing taste, which personally I can't differentiate from the popular brands. I'd say it's more like pepsi than coca-cola which I prefer. It keeps it's fizz really well, which is important in a carbonated drink! I don't want to open a 2 litre bottle and find it having gone flat when I pour a glass the next day. And lastly the price. Very reasonable for an own brand replica. This isn't their basics cola, (which I haven't tried, so can't comment on.) It's their high end version of the real thing.
I used to buy sainsburys diet classic cola all the time, and it's still brilliant value, particularly if you buy the 4 pack of two litre bottles. This costs £2.73 working out to 68p a bottle. I now often buy the tesco version which doesn't taste as nice as sainsburys but is cheaper at 42p a bottle.
Very highly recommended to any lovers of diet coke and diet pepsi!
Summary: Will continue to buy when I pop into sainsburys, very good diet cola

- 27/05/09 Personally I think that some things can be substituted for Supermarket own brands and some things can't. In my opinion Diet Coke is one thing that can't be substituted at all - I have tried to find cheaper versions and I found all of them made me gag! I guess it's down to each individual's taste buds though. |
