Sainsbury's Classic Diet Cola

Advantages: fizzes up really well, distinctive premium taste, no artificial flavours.

Disadvantages: price difference not impressive, a bit fruity and a bit more calories

I drink diet coke all day long, the first thing in the morning and last thing at night which can seriously get a bit on the pricey side! Recession and all that it was time to tighten my belt and go looking for the cheaper versions supermarkets had to offer. I spotted the 'Sainsbury's Classic Diet cola' in my local Sainsburys for 87p for a 2 litre bottle. It wasn't substantial enough considering you could ideally get bottles of the original diet cola for a couple of pennys extra if you look around, I just bought it out of pure curiousity as I find the original taste very hard to master, and other brands don't even come close.

You can't buy this particular drink in cans anymore just plastic 2 litre bottles. It has the same silver foil design as diet coke but a lot more basic and just has 'Classic Diet cola' printed in red. It is slightly more fattening than the original as a 250ml serving contains 3 calories instead of just 1, so drinking in excessive amounts it is a bit of a difference. It only has natural colours and flavours which is a bonus and you have to keep refrigerated and consumed within 3 days of opening.

I didn't exactly have high hopes for the taste but it actual captures the distinctive taste really well. If you don't drink diet coke much you wouldn't really notice a difference at all! It tastes a little bit 'fruiter' and a bit more bland but nothing to complain about and I'm a complete supermarket soda snob! What suprised me aswell was how fizzy it was and managed to keep it's fizz without going flat like other brands. I've tried a lot of other dupes that have made me wanna gag but this is actually the best one I've tried and I'd give it an 8/10 taste wise. You really recognise you're drinking 'diet coke' unlike others that taste of virtually fizzy nothing.

I'm really impressed with Sainsbury's diet cola dupe but I probably wouldn't purchase again due to the price. It seems cheeky that they can price their own brand at nearly 90p when if you search around for offers on the original you could get a 2 litre bottle for around £1.10 the difference in price is not substantial enough and seems like a rip-off. but it's a very refreshing drink and definitely bearable, if it was around the 40p mark I'd replace it. If you're serious about saving a few pence I'd definitely recommend it as I think it's nice but the original is a little bit better and tasteful. I think it'd be good for childrens parties and stuff but for the most part splash out a few extra for the original.

You can purchase from all Sainsburys stores and Sainsbury's stores only for around 87p depending on your area.

Summary: Best supermarket brand I've tried
