Advantages: It tastes not so bad and is cheap
Disadvantages: Too much sweetener in it and I'm not keen on the added taste of coconut I feel I can detect
Anyone who regularly reads my reviews will by now know I am a lover of energy drinks. Having had an eating disorder I relied on them really as I felt they helped up my calorie intake and boost my very poor energy levels.
Now however I've booted the eating disorder up the bum and I eat and drink normally (hence this being a 'diet' product) and I go the gym most days and work me bum off to eat pretty much whatever I want to sort of thing lol.
I tend to drink alot of water through my work outs or isotonic drinks but prior to a work out I usually have an energy drink of some variety on route and one when I come out. I think it's just a mind thing really and a bit of a habit but I really enjoy them too!
The Packaging....
Well this drink is available in a grey plastic 1L bottle (priced 94p)with the same labelling on it as the can. I always opt to buy cans wherever possible for freshness and in my case I like to drink them on the go (priced at 34p each). So my can is mainly silver with a 'bolt' of bright blue lightning on the front and in red, white and dark blue writing I'm told it is Sainsbury's 'Diet' Blue Bolt High Impact Stimulation For Mind & Body and that it's best served chilled and is suitable for Vegetarians and Vegans. On the back of the can I'm told a bit about the product, nutritional information, ingredients, storage instructions and safety advice is all given as well as contact details being given for Sainsbury's, the aluminium symbol and size being stated (250ml as it's the can remember) and finally there is a bar-code on there. It's a nice enough can in design and I like the robust and sturdy ring pull to the top of it and all round it's ok and functional.
A Bit About The Product According To The Back Of The Can....
Carbonated low calorie mixed fruit flavour stimulation drink with taurine, caffeine and sweetener.
High caffeine content 30mg/100ml.
The Taste Test....
Well the drink itself is almost clear in colour and very sparkly opposed to fizzy and it doesn't go flat immediately or anything like that. It has a fruity aroma to it that matches a fruity slightly sour taste and I'm sure hidden in their somewhere is the taste of coconut. I can't put my fingers on the flavours really as in what it's exactly meant to be but I can detect rather alot of sweeteners in this which do leave a weird slightly tinny after-taste once drank. It is refreshing when drinking it but because of the sweeteners it contains that it leaves on the pallette, for me, it leaves me rather thirsty!
Does It Work Though?....
For me, no. I expected it to give me an energy boost due to the high caffeine content but I feel through a lack of real sugar it was held back from giving me any kind of buzz. Yes it tasted ok if nothing really special but all round, this drink didn't tick any boxes for me..sadly!
Nutritional Information Per 250ml....
Energy: 5 Kcal
Fat: Trace
Salt: Trace
Exclusive to Sainsbury's.
Summary: Not for me this one as it tastes a bit all round cheap!

- 09/07/09 I've not tried the diet version of this, but I liked the normal one. Remarkably similar to Red Bull and great used as a mixer. I don't really like low sugar drinks as I hate the taste of the sweetener, horrible aftertaste. This stuff does seem to go flat quikly I noticed. |
