Now and then I like the odd energy drink, not to actually give me energy but just because I fancy one as a refreshing drink. I hate paying ridiculous prices though for the likes of Red Bull so I try and buy cheaper versions but ones which taste very similar - although I never can find a similar drink. Blue Bolt is one I bought before from Sainsburys, as it is Sainsburys very own energy drink. I often before going out drink Vodka and Redbull too, to try make my nights out cheaper but if buying actual Redbull it tends to make my night quite expensive so that's the main reason I bought Sainsburys Blue Bolt. You can either buy it in the original or diet version, I've bought both and to be honest notice no difference in either.
You can either buy it in cans or 1 litre bottles, I bought the 1 litre bottle for just 94p. They are silver/grey plastic bottles with a blue screw off cap on top. A blue bolt shoots down the front of the bottle and we are told it is Sainsbury's Blue Bolt - high impact stimulation for mind and body. The bottle says it contains 'taurine and caffeine and it is best served chilled. On the back we are told that this drink is a 'carbonated mixed fruit flavour stimulation drink with added taurine and caffiene. These drinks are also suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
I have to say this drink almost smells and tastes exactly the same it has a tangy sweet fruity aroma which can definitely be tasted too. It is quite fizzy too, although it begins quite fizzy it doesn't half go flat quickly. It leaves a sort of film in my mouth and a taste which lasts until the next day if drinking before a night out, it leaves my mouth feeling quite acidic and metal like too - as if I've sucked on a spoon, not that I do that everyday lol. The tangy film thats left coating my mouth makes me even more thirsty than what I start off feeling in the beginning. As for it being fruity, well it does have a sweet taste to it but I can't pick out any particular fruits really so don't mistake this for a refreshing fruit drink.
As for giving me energy? Well no it doesn't not even the slightest boost in fact. I would definitely rather pay hefty prices for my redbull to go with my vodka than keep buying this. It is really disapointing that it leaves my mouth feeling so groggy and thick. If drinking as a mixer it doesn't seem to hide the vodka's bitterness either which is what Redbull does slightly.
The only similarity it has with Redbull is the colour but even that isn't the same, Redbull to me looks like pee whereas Blue Bolt looks like watered down pee - not attractive lol!
Each 250ml serving contains;
105cals
fat trace
salt trace
To be honest I wouldn't reccomend this to anybody, the thick, sickly film it leaves around your mouth is vile and the taste isn't all that great to begin with. The fizziness to it isn't pleasant and when it turns flat within a short space of time it tastes worse. I'll stick to Redbull from now on!
