I switched to buying organic milk mainly for health reasons.I read an article in France about a link between the hormones given routinely to cattle and breast cancer.I was also concerned about the antibiotics which are routinely used.
The food industry constantly reassures us that the chemicals in our food are safe, and that the use of pesticides are not harmful-but they would say that wouldn't they ? To produce food without the use of these things means less production =LESS PROFIT .
Cows used to produce organic milk are not routinely given antibiotics, they are fed on a diet which does not contain any g.m products and no pesticides are used in the field where they graze.Following the B.s.e scare, and the recent ,foot and mouth outbreak, comsumers ars becoming far more aware of what goes on in the food industry, are are demanding that our food is safe and well produced-not a lot to ask!I for one would prefer to drink milk from cows fed a natural diet .!
Young children are more prone to the effects of consuming the chemicals which are present in non organic food.Small amounts can be far more harmful to a small child than to an adult given there lower body weight.
Sainsburys oganic milk comes in 1 pint,4 and 6 pint plastic bottles.I buy the semi-skimmed which costs £1.35-well worth the little extra in my opinion.I also buy full fat organic milk for by 2 young children.
When I switched to organic milk I really noticed the difference in taste-organic milk is much creamier so much so that I switched to a lower fat milk-even more benifit!
I do find that organic milk does not keep as well as non organic, but it is only a minor incovenience.I can't say that sainsburys organic milk tastes any better than any other supermarkets brand ,however they nearly always have it in stock in my local store ,whereas tesco ars constantly selling out!
Organically produced food is also better for the enviroment -spraying inse
c
ticides is harmful both to us and the wildlife we share our planet with.I am not convinced about the animal welfare arguement-dairy cattle are kept for our benefit alone.
In general I think that organic milk is an excellent product and well worth the extra cost-pity about the plastic bottle though!

- 09/09/04 Given that I only use milk when making scrambled egg I have never tried any other varieties. Good review. |

- 09/09/04 I don't want antibiotics in my milk either! Also, dairy cattle have a horrible time often, if they are not reared organically. Well done you! |
