Advantages: Gets you drunk on a budget
Disadvantages: Disgusting aftertaste
I had a particularly bad experience drinking this Spanish tipple. I was 14 at the time on holiday in Tenerife. I had just entered the world of under age drinking and I thought, seeing as I was on holiday, it would be rude not to sample the local brew. It was a big mistake. San Miguel is a very strong and unpleasant lager (5.4% I think) which would not appeal to fans of smoother drinks such as Budweiser or Fosters. It leaves a putrid aftertaste not unlike sucking on a toilet brush which has been left outside in the midday Playa De Las Americas sun. However, this did not deter me, heck I was 14! Eight bottles later the next thing I knew I was serenading the crowded bar and slurring my way through Robbie Williams's hit Angels on the karaoke. Throughout the song I felt my legs wobbling and head spinning, it must have been a truly shocking sight! To cap my embarrassment, I tried to emulate a Robbie-esque dance routine and gyrated against the microphone stand. That was about all I can remember from that night and I was still tasting the lager the following morning. I've been put off San Miguel for life, but its cheapness in Spain means it will remain a popular choice for holidaymakers looking to get into a similar state on a budget.
