Advantages: Clean crisp taste, Refreshing

Disadvantages: Availability

I love beer. I know that will not shock anyone who knows me and my normal Friday nights out but are you aware of what beers I drink?
We all go for Budweiser if there is nothing else because, well, everywhere sells bottle of Bud dont they?
It is possibly for this reason that so many people are missing out on the other bottled delights waiting for them in the chiller cabinet.
Maybe it is because these beers are not trendy that they do not get drunk. Maybe it is because they are not as well advertised.
One thing is for sure. If you have not tried it, Busweiser is no match for the cool refreshing taste of San Miguel.

Most of you that have been on a Mediterranean Holiday will probably recognise the San Miguel Beer. It is a firm favourite in the resorts of Spain and the islands.
It was more trendy in the early 90's with the "package holiday" brigade. Now, it is making a comeback.

Brewed?
Well, it is a spanish beer brewed in Spain, USA and the Philipines. However, it tastes more like a Mexican Beer with its light colouration and lack of strong smell. The smell is quite faitly hops based.

Taste.
It is a very light beer. Possibly why it was the choice of the holiday maker. It is refreshing to the taste buds and also quite sweet. This made it more appealing to the girls too as it was not as sour as some beers.
Served cold it is an awakening sensation that brings you back to life in the heat of your holiday!
Possible one if the cleanest, most crisp tasting lagers I have ever had the pleasure of drinking.

Packaging.
It comes in 2 forms. Bottled and canned. The Cans are the traditional 330ml size common to Coke cans and leave an unpleasant taste in your mouth like most canned lager. The bottles are typical bottle shape and size and the ONLY way to enjoy your beer.

Where to get it from.
Now, this can be a problem. Not all off licences sell it and even fewer pubs. I find your mos
t likely place to get hold of San Miguel in my town are:

The Mexican Restaurant. Along with Sol, these are essentials there. More about this later.

Bottoms Up Off Licence sells it.
Thresher does not stock it.

Supermarkets.
Tescos sells it for definite.

Trendy Wine bars tend to sell it as opposed to local Pubs. It is more of a young persons drink and more likely to be found here.

What to have it with...
Now, you can drink your beer as it is or introduce a new aspect to it to make it even more refreshing.
When at the mexican restaurant, I discovered this trick.
Ask for a quarter of lime. If it is cut into quarters it slips into the bottle easier.
Now, push it into the neck of the bottle.
Now, push your finger into the neck too.
Be careful as gas will build up. Allow this to escape.
Now, gently tip the bottle upside down with your finger in the hole.
The lime will rise.
Once the lime is at the base of the bottle (which is now the top!, stay with me people!)
Tip it back to the upright position.
The lime will rise back to the neck. Thus it will have flavoured the beer with a hint of lime. Leave the lime in the bottle so that it further flavours the beer as it passes through the neck of the bottle.

This is the best way to drink your San Miguel.
It gives it a totally different taste that compliments it.

Price.
An average priced beer. In the pubs, it costs about the price of a Bud or equivalent lager and in the supermarket and offy, it is about the same too.
Expect to pay about £2.30 in the pub and about £1.25 in the offy.

Overall.
A good alternative to drink if you are bored of drinking "the old faithfuls". Ask at your bar to see if they stock. If they dont, find a new pub!

Lager and lime eh, who'd have thought...

Someo ne once told me that the Mexicans only put limes in the tops of their beer bottles to keep the flies off.
