San Pellegrino Limonata
Advantages: very freshing, full of flavour, special compared to everyday drinks
Disadvantages: expensive, sugar content, not as available as everyday drinks
San Pellegrino is an Italian brand who offer fresh, fruity drinks. They use citrus fruits including lemon, orange (various types) and grapefruit in their drinks.
'Sparkling lemon beverage'
This lemon drink is made from lemons which are sun-ripened in the South of Italy. It has 16% lemon juice concentrate, mineral water and sugar as the main ingredients. Served chilled, it should quench a thirst. It is available in two types of packaging - a small glass bottle and a can.
Each 330ml can has just under 150 calories and 10g of sugar.
Limonata isn't as easy to locate like a can of Coca Cola. You can purchase it online from stores such as Amazon for under £10 including delivery (6 pack of cans). If you shop on the Ocado website, you can buy this pack for £4.05. Local food halls may also stock this.
Despite being a big fizzy drinks fan, I rarely shy away from the usual suspects ie Irn Bru and Coca Cola. Yesterday, I was browsing the food hall in Jenners (Edinburgh) and spotted a few cans of San Pellegrino. I tried the lemon first and bought the orange today. I wanted something a little bit different from my regular drinks. I paid £1.15 a can which isn't a massive amount but certainly isn't crazy cheap either. Despite the awful weather in Scotland, I was desperate for something refreshing to drink after a train journey with various bags.
The packaging of the can is definitely attractive. It is mainly yellow with lemons pictured on the front. It is finished off with a little foil casing around the top of the can which allows it to look more special than your regular lemon drink (yes Sprite and 7UP - I mean you!). Anyway, the most important aspect is the taste. I consumed my Limonata straight from the fridge and straight out of the can. You could pour it over some ice on a warm day or use it as a mixer should you wish to. I just wanted a pleasant drink as I was feeling rather flustered!
Limonata has a lovely fizz - not too harsh but certainly not a weak, watery fizz. It has a fresh, lemon scent as you would expect. If you are a fan of the sweeter Lemon based drinks such as Sprite, this may not suit you. The lemon flavour is quite strong and is more natural in flavour than any lemon drink I have ever had before. It is very fresh and ultimately thirst quenching from the first sip. The lemon flavour is very evident. There is a fruity, slightly sweet flavour at first which is incredibly refreshing and tamed a little by the water in the drink. The aftertaste of the drink is quite strong and is very bitter but not overpowering.
Limonata is of a high quality and rich in flavour. It is more special than regular lemonade and is so much nicer than regular, lemon flavour sparkling water. It is an acquired taste in my opinion as not everyone will appreciate the natural, bitter flavouring from the fresh lemons. My sister had a sip and found it a little too harsh for her taste buds. I couldn't drink it daily but as an occasional refresher I would happily buy it again if I could get my hands on a few cans! It is high in sugar so take care with that.
Overall a special lemon drink and recommended!
