Advantages: Great price, tastes exactly the same as Archers - very cheap!

Disadvantages: You risk looking a bit stingy turning up at a party with it...

~*~ Savanna Peach Schnapps ~*~

After years of sticking to the trusted, well known brand labels I recently decided to venture into the unknown territory of shops own, and so called 'rip-off' brands of these well known labels. My latest discovery is 'Savanna' peach schnapps - the cheaper version of Archers schnapps in the same flavour.

~*~ The bottle ~*~

The packaging of Savanna is pretty similar to that of Archers. It has the same large red lettering, although the brand name is written vertically as opposed to Archers horizontal lettering. The glass bottle even has the same frosted glass effect that Archers has. This makes it very easy to distinguish in the alcohol section of supermarkets, and you instantly recognise it as being a peach schnapps drink, making selection time as quick as possible - great stuff!

~*~ The content and comparison ~*~

Savanna alcohol percentage is 21.5% volume. Archers is 23% volume - a bit stronger, but not really a noticeable difference.

0g of fat per serving for either Archers or Savanna - this doesn't mean their not fattening though so be careful! There are approximately 72 calories per 1oz serving of both Savanna and Archers, according to the information I have been able to find online. Most people underestimate how many calories there are in alcohol, it's surprising how the calories start to add up! If your watching your weight, a shot of archers with diet lemonade is the best way to go - don't make the mistake of thinking your being a bit healthier by having pure fruit juice as these can add up to as much as 90 extra calories a serving!

There are 6.6g of carbohydrates per serving for each of the brands, so those of you on the Atkins or something similar may want to bear that in mind whilst making your selections. There are also 6.5g sugar per serving, which is quite high.

~*~ Price ~*~

A 70cl bottle of Savanna will set you back £6.09 at Tesco. The same sized bottle will set you back £11.29 at Tesco. Archers is generally priced around the £12 mark for 70cl in supermarkets, sometimes more, so basically your getting the same amount for half the price by selecting Savanna instead of Archers - meaning you can buy twice as much! (Just don't blame the headache on me....)

Tesco also have a brilliant offer on at the moment - two bottles of Savanna / Cococabana Coconut Liquer (Malibu) or Soiree Coffee liquer (mix and match if you want) for £10! What a bargain! This offer finishes on 27th August so make sure you get down to your local Tesco before then!

~*~ The taste ~*~

Savanna is a very sweet liquer - the taste of peach is very noticeable. I'm a big Archers fan and I could not tell the difference between the two at all, which is great as it will save me a lot of money!

The taste of Savanna (like Archers) can get quite sickly after a while. I find that if I have it as my drink of choice for a few nights in a row (if I go out a few nights in a row!) I start to go off it a bit, so I tend to mix things up a bit and only have it every once in a while. Overall, Savanna makes a nice, refreshing drink perfect for summer BBQ's!

Be careful whilst drinking this liquer - the alcohol content is quite high and it's easy to forget that you are drinking something alcoholic - until you stand up! The alcohol volume in Savanna is about double what you'd find in a glass of wine, so decrease the amount you drink in proportion to that.

~*~ The combinations... ~*~

I wouldn't advise drinking this straight, although it would certainly get you on your way to being drunk a whole lot quicker, if that is your aim! I usually mix Savanna with diet lemonade with a slice of fresh lemon on the side. It is a perfect summer time drink, and the slice of lemon makes it that little bit special.

One of the most interesting schnapps mixers I found whilst searching the internet for inspiration was the 'Schnapp Bomb' recipe. For this, all you need is the bottle of schnapps, and one bag of sugar. To combine, pour the bottle of schnapps into a saucepan, heat until it is hot but not boiling. Then, gradually add the sugar until saturation point, and serve in shot glasses whilst still hot. I have never heard of this before and from the amount of sugar I don't think I would recommend it - but I'd love to hear if any of you have tried it?!

Other, more usual Archers mixers include fruit juices and tonic water. I think lemonade is probably the most popular choice, and what it goes best with.

For a great cocktail, combine peach schnapps, vodka, orange juice and cranberry juice for 'Sex on the Beach', my all time favourite summer cocktail. I don't usually like vodka but you can't taste it when it's all mixed together so don't let that ingredient put you off.

~*~ The verdict ~*~

I would recommend Savanna to all Archers fans! There really isn't a noticeable difference between the two, and the bottle is half the price! Ok, you face looking like a bit of a cheapskate if you turn up to a party with a bottle of 'Savanna', but I'm sure people will get over it! After trying Savanna, I would never purchase full priced Archers again as I feel like it's money being thrown down the drain.

Definitely worth a try - and if you can grab two bottles for £10 from Tesco, even more reason to do so!

Summary: Exactly the same as Archers at half the price!

I was looking at this in Tesco the other day, I like the Aldi version of Archers which is even cheaper at £5.69.
