Advantages: Drinkable

Disadvantages: Nothing special about it

A few years ago, I was travelling around and decided to pop in to Thailand - I didn't think a great deal to the country, finding it quite touristy, one thing you can't avoid though is the obvious humidity. The minute you leave the air-conditioned airport of Bangkok, there's only one thing on your mind - drinking liquids! Of course beer isn't ideal for rehydrating but a new country's liquour supply was on hand to be tested!

Singha is produced by the Boon Rawd Brewery - the Boon Rawd family originally bought rights to German beers to produce it for the Thai King, some 4 generations ago.

The recipe today is said to be pretty much the same and therefore the beer has a distinctly European flavour, the usual beer is 6% whilst they also offer a light-weight option that's 3.5%, I personally have only tried the 6% golden dragon labelled pale lager (which has now been scaled down to 5%). Yellow in colour, it always appeared a little flat to me and certainly doesn't have the head on offer that the picture here on dooyoo shows. It doesn't have a strong smell and the taste is a little bit sweet with a hint of malt and perhaps fruitiness, the finish is oddly peppery but there's no aftertaste.

As refreshing as it is on a hot day, nothing particularly stands out about it and I wouldn't go out of my way to find it. This beer is widely available in Thai restaurants around the world.

Summary: Not bad for an Asian beer
