Advantages: Better taste than most low fat counterparts, individual sachets available
Disadvantages: Instructions on jar make it a little watery, better with milk
With winter drawing on I decided to try out a new hot chocolate when I saw it in the supermarket the other week, being as I had enjoyed other Skinny Cow products. The company, specialising in low fat but not low taste products, have brought out two new flavours of hot chocolate to warm you up whilst keeping your waistline trim.
I am pretty much ALWAYS cold, as I write this I am battling against my (menopausal) coworkers to shut the windows and wishing they would turn the heating on for the year already. My hands are cold, my nose is cold, I'm swaddled in layers, and almost didn't write this review just because it is making me crave a Skinny Cow Hot Choc right now, and I don't have any with me!
I opted for the traditional chocolate flavour as opposed to chocolate mint, and confident the brand would deliver something I liked took a 200g jar rather than a trial or on-the-go sachet. (Yes, I now regret not having had a sachet to slip into my bag or maybe I would be a bit warmer right now).
The instructions are pretty straightforward - add two heaped teaspoons of powder to a mug and fill with boiling water, stirring well. I did this for my first cup but found it a little weak, watery, and pretty much exactly the same as Cadburys Options hot chocolate, which I wasn't overly keen on.
Eager to try again, I this time added a third spoon of powder, as I was using a big mug, and a little skimmed milk. I stirred the milk and powder a bit before adding the water, which I found reduced the powdery lumps (or 'magma' as I like to call them). I really enjoyed this cup and would recommend making it this way!
With the added milk and extra powder, the drink was rich and chocolatey, creamy rather than watery (as long as you stir thorougly) and much better than other low fat and calorie hot chocolates I've tried.
Calorie-wise, a serving contains 40 calories and has 1.5g fat, of course this will be increased a little if you add milk and some extra powder, but it's still not too sinful and will satisfy chocolate cravings if you're dieting like I am.
A 200g jar costs around £2.70 and individual serving sachets run for 29p. A jar should last at least 20 drinks.
I will definitely give the mint version a try and make my feelings on it known in due course! Check out skinnycow.co.uk for more info.
(I feel even more bloody freezing now!)
Summary: A nice, guilt-free treat on those chilly winter evenings.
