Advantages: Easy to drink
Disadvantages: bitter after-taste expensive
I had my work Christmas meal yesterday and started off with good intentions that I would not mix my drink and decided to stick to wine only. After about 3 hours and 11 pubs I grew a little bit bored of wine and decided to try something else.
My mate bought me a bottle of Smirnoff Ice, I must admit it's been a fair while since my last bottle of Smirnoff Ice and I had forgotten what they were like.
The bottle neck has 'limited edition' written around the top - could this be any different to the bottles I used to drink. In fact we started a discussion about the fact they were 'limited edition' bottles the girls who would normally drink Smirnoff Ice explained that they did not taste any different but the drink was placed in a more decorative bottle. The 275ml glass bottle cost £2.80.
There are two different types of Smirnoff Ice - 'Original,' and 'Triple Black' each with a ABV of 5.5%. The drink inside the metallic bottle is a cloudy colour, it looks a lot like cloudy lemonade and on opening smell like it also. This is because Smirnoff Ice is basically lemonade mixed with vodka. It is classed as an Alco-pop and is usually popular with teenagers and women.
The bottle was served ice cold from the fridge and I must admit the colder it was the better it tasted, as the time went on and the bottle warned up in my hand the taste was slightly bitter. The taste overall was quite nice and pleasant, the drink felt easy to drink so its easy to see why some people would get drunk on it and not realise it was happening.
The taste although lovely at first slowly wore off and the aftertaste was bitter and left me feeling very thirsty. The actual taste seemed synthetic, not like a normal lemonade and vodka drink. It really did taste like there were many flavourings and additives. I think this may be why I first went off Smirnoff years ago. The drunk was also quite fizzy and left me feeling a bit gassy, I don't think it's a very lady0like drink if you feel like you want to burp all night.
A bottle of Smirnoff in a pub will cost about £2.30- £2.80, in a club you could pay up to £4 for a bottle. In a supermarket it is possible to pick up 4 or 5 bottles for £5 and they sell for around £1.60 each. It is also possible to buy a 1 litre bottle for £2.50 - £3.50. I do think that Smirnoff is expensive and for what it is I would only buy it from a supermarket, saying that there are cheaper versions of the drink and I think these are as good. I didn't enjoy the drink but then again I don't tend to drink vodka anyway. It was a nice drink for a change but I wouldn't recommend it if you don't normally drink vodka, or if you don't like lemon.
Summary: An alco-pop that is easy to drink but tastes a bit bitter
