An average vodka for the average person (Smirnoff Vodka)

Advantages: Mediocre, middle priced.

Disadvantages: Mass produced, quality isn't quite up to snuff.

Smirnoff is owned by Diageo, a large British drinks manufacturer, it isn't Russian. Your bottle of Smirnoff vodka probably comes from France or Turkey, just about anywhere but Russia.

As a drink Smirnoff is... Not quite acceptable straight. A good vodka is very drinkable straight, it doesn't need anything added and to be honest, Smirnoff does. Smirnoff is an average vodka, not terrible but not quite smooth enough to be considered good. Add some lemonade, or coke and it's fine though. Straight there's a little catch, a bit of roughness as it goes down making it not quite a pleasant experience.

It's worth noting that Smirnoff has been in court over the name Smirnov, the Russian Smirnov family producer of vodka, who have won medals over the quality of their products. I can't help thinking that Smirnoff is a bit of a fraud. You'll notice that the adverts don't mention it being great drink, they advertise it as a "lifestyle choice" instead.

If you want a quality vodka, one you can drink straight without the back of your throat being sandpapered raw then go for a Russian import. I recommend Samson Vodka, though it probably won't be available. Stolichnaya instead is reasonable, but not quite as nice as Samson. See what vodka should really be like, not the stuff we usually get.

Summary: Good as a mixer.
