Advantages: reduced smell and taste

Disadvantages: a little costly compared to other types of vodka

What can I possibly write about vodka? That was the question I sat here and asked myself well what ever comes I suppose……

Smirnoff vodka is probably the best known, and most expensive brand I’ve come across it’s also, in my opinion (which this is) the best. After having tasted cheaper vodkas I am definitely sticking with Smirnoff. It does have a nice sharp sting as it goes down but once the initial vial taste has been inflicted you don’t get any real after taste. I don’t find the taste bad personally, I mean you notice it yes but since it’s my drink I must have built up an intolerance to it. I don’t notice any taste in Smirnoff vodka and can quite happily drink a bottle straight (hm sounding like an alcoholic now). However other vodkas make me feel sick. I once bought a supermarket’s own brand and the taste was nothing short of putrid, never again.

Can’t say the smell is that bad either, yes it’s a little toxic and it’s something you couldn’t hide from your mother, trust me a party while the parents are on holiday should avoid vodka, of any sort. Although Smirnoff has a mild smell it does linger, especially in confined spaces (and on your breath!).

Although I love my vodka, and tend to drink it straight, what makes it a great drink is that it is so versatile it goes with anything (although I have no literally mixed it with everything, obviously I am not that mad). One of the nicest drinks around is Smirnoff Ice, 10 or so bottle off this and I’m well away. All it is is vodka and lemon but it’s so nice, for me it’s the sweetness of the drink, the reaction of the alcohol and sugar… Unfortunately I can’t replicate the same taste myself, although it is better using traditional style lemonade (you know the cloudy stuff) than the normal stuff.

I would also suggest the VK drinks, come in all sorts of flavours and so I sup
pose tells you what vodka tastes alright mixed with, my personal favourite is VK Blue I don’t know what the mixer is but boy is it nice! A word of warning though, some of the flavours eliminate the taste of vodka all together and it tastes like pop really, not good when you drink it like it and find yourself poor and drunk as a skunk.

Best accompaniments to vodka (i.e. won’t make you violently sick)

Orange juice – a traditional mixture, works best if the orange is fresh, avoid flat (dilute) orange it just doesn’t have the same effect

Red Bull/Red Devil – my local nightclub doesn’t sell Red Bull but it does Red Devil, Vodka and Red Devil chasers are sweet at £1.50 a go – on for the students there I feel. It tastes quite nice and goes down easily, has a little after taste but nothing too bad, it depends on the vodka used as well. I also found that it’s easier to get drunk if you drink chasers, whether it’s because I tend to drink more or if it’s the effect of the Red Devil I don’t know

Coke – although I can’t drink vodka and coke, it doesn’t do it for me a lot of my mates love it to death and since it is a popular choice I can’t leave it out I suppose

Iron Brew – WKD springs to mind, yummy stuff I must say, but making your own works as well, because you can make it to taste (the more vodka the better, after all you only need to flavour it a little bit…)

Avoid mixing with at all costs (i.e. WILL make you violently sick)

Pineapple juice – not one of my better ideas, there was no orange in the fridge and I had drunk a lot of vodka straight, you know fancied a little variation, so I figured that the difference between orange juice and pineapple wouldn’t be that much but it is, trust me it isn’t worth trying

Baileys – well talk about mixing your drinks, I am not a fan of
Baileys in the first place but with vodka it’s erm interesting, guaranteed to make you hurl though

Tomato juice – when your friends give you drinks and you don’t know what they are mixing be suspicious, and never go for this combination, but I don’t like tomato juice in the first place so…

Personally the best way to drink vodka is straight and in nothing less than a double, with plenty on ice. It is fun to make up vodka jellies and hand them out to your mates. They taste just like jelly, surprisingly, and are good fun to make, eat and enjoy the effects of!

And finally to finish off with after sampling many varieties of vodka I would stick with Smirnoff, never go for cheaper vodkas because at the end of the day I suppose you pay for what you get and I have never been really ill or hung over by Smirnoff vodka, I suppose everyone is different but for me there is no competition. Oh and always make sure that if you are mixing your vodka with a fizzy drink that it is actually fizzy, there is nothing worse than vodka with flat pop (I once had a flat WKD and it was not nice).

How could you miss out tonic as a mixer? I would also add that for a really lethal concoction, mixing vodka straight with sweet liqueurs such as Archers or Creme de Cassis can be very effective - the vodka kinda cancels out the sugar, they taste great and are killer.

And if you really think smirnoff is the best on the market, you really should try Finlandia. Especially the cranberry flavour. Yum yum yum...

Ah, but you see the ONLY time I drink vodka is in a Bloody Mary...ergo, it really doesn't matter what the vodka tastes like, I guess! Good op, nonetheless.
